Personally, I think it's a really interesting mod to try!

If I did that, I would locate it somewhere that would have a good secondary use if it does break down from vibration or doesn't work out. Build it in so that the space can be easily made into a cabinet or drawers.

Good luck! Go for it! Of course, be sure to let us know how it works out!

Hello there, that is exactly the plan, if the DW breaks down or I get prosecuted by the purist campers enforcement police or something, ill mod it back to cabinets or drawers.

great input guys! keep 'em coming
Cheers,
L

Hi Luis - I think a dishwaher sounds like an interesting, innovative idea. Not my style - but its not my trailer. The RV world has plenty of room for folks who try new mods and I wish you you fun and joy from this one.

I'm looking forward to reading about any other changes you want to make to turn your trailer into your dream home on wheels.

Our Danby dishwasher had no trouble installed in a large fifth-wheel (in the location intended for a clothes washer), but the trailer was used in one place at a time for long periods, and was only towed about 3000 km with the dishwasher in it.

The dishwashers in large motorhomes tend to be drawer-type designs intended for home use, typically the Fisher&Paykel.

I would want any dishwasher to be near the axle, both for trailer balance and for less jarring with bounces.

Galley update

After a bit of work on the weekend, I have managed to locate (temporarily) key components of the working bathroom.

Left side: freezer (cooler + refrigeration system) on slide out and Dishwasher
Center: Drawers and Oven/range
Right side: fridge (cooler running with glycol cubes and ice), port a potty, sink, converts to bathroom.

The counter will pivot up 90 deg. and latch to the overhead counter effectively making a vertical partition. Another slide out partition closes the bottom side and the closet's door also slides forward to complete a fully enclosed bathroom/mudroom/ wet clothesline space/ wet cleaning area for boots or dog, etc.

Port a potty is stored under sink and can be used with cooler in place for road emergencies, or more comfortable at night at camp (the cooler shroud be left outside or in the car...

I am planning a single faucet with pull out for shower/cleaning purposes. Also a hand pump to use without turning on the pump when camping off the grid.

Some pics to show some details as the set up takes place.
Please feel free to ask and comments, your insights are always welcomed.
L

NOTE: the stove top will be at a higher elevation, flush with the DW and sink, approximately at 39" high from the floor +0.00 ref.

trailer balance

Brian, I think you are right on the concern on tongue weight specially, all these appliances and cabinets in the front, plus propane bottle etc... I need to watch out and balance with batteries, water tanks, water heaters, etc in the back.

As for your comment on jarring, I disagree, the more "over the axle" the more direct hit! I think.

Anyways, thanks and keep your insights coming this way, much appreciated.

If the flexibility of the trailer structure cushions shock, then I can see the ride being smoother away from the axle... but I hope the frame is stiffer than that. What I was thinking was that when the wheels go over a bump, at least the back end of the trailer is on the wrong end of a lever and gets an even bigger bump. I have heard people complain that this is a problem with rear kitchens, and anyone who has ridden in the back of a school bus on a country road might understand.

With this front kitchen design I agree that the ride would be even better up there, between the two supporting points of the axle and hitch. I was actually concerned about a rear kitchen location when I wrote my note - sorry, I had missed that this is in the front.

Even with a smooth ride location up front, I would still want to keep the massive components together for stability. A design that puts them all up front would be great for stability, but there is that tongue weight challenge and if the reaction to that is to pile stuff at the extreme tail end the stability advantage would be eliminated.

I don't know if I'm going blind or what, but I can't decipher the pics well enough to tell if you've actually gotten the dishwasher through the door of the trailer yet.

Is one of those pics showing it inside?

I ask 'cause there's no way one would go through the door of my Trillium.

Francesca

Don't feel bad - I initially thought that it looked like the appliances were sitting in the back of the trailer, not the front.

I think they all show it inside, other than the one where it is shown open on a deck.

The Danby countertop dishwasher is much smaller than a typical built-in. Turn it on its back and you only need 17" of door opening width.

I don't know ...maybe I am missing something here, but I just have a Hard time with the Porta Potty that next to the food area.

The dishwasher might be a good idea,as for myself I don't use enough dishes when we are out camping, and would rather have space built for items I would want to store.

All that said the most important thing is it is Your camper so you should make it the way you want it.One thing for sure if you decide you don't like it one way you can always change it to be different. Just make it safe on the road, and as your home.

Good luck and Happy Camping

That "porta-potty too close to food area" gave me a bit of a chuckle, Lynn-
My trailer's so small that there isn't anyplace in it that isn't close to the food area!

funny!
I got a CD/DVD player today and it came with a remote! (Jensen DV2011), I thing I can stretch from wherever I am in the trailer and reach the player... Well!

Port a potty is an emergency feature. I plan to use campground facilities as a matter of course. Even when camping off campgrounds I plan the good old bush for #1 and #2.
That is why the Port a potty is usually stored out of the way, and only "deployed" for use.

Regards,
L

Ok you guys I'm glad I was able to give y'll a good laugh. Yes I know that in our little eggs you are always "close to"everything....even the P.Potty. What caused my concern was that in the pictures it looks like the porta potty is to be storied ON TOP of an ice chest. Now even IF it is used only in a night time or emergence time (To my health inspector brain ) that just screams danger.

Now I will admit that DH often has to remind me that I am retired and can now live a normal life and do not have to see problems that are not there, but I guess old habits die hard. So I will just go back to my room and hope I was seeing it wrong and it will be stored under a bench so that there is no danger of any leakage or spills around the food, and drinks,or food prep area.

Love this forum, we are all such good friends and can take the little teasing that is dished out with a smile and good cheer that it is meant to be...you guys made me laugh at myself and I Thank You all for that. I just felt I had to explain what I thought I was seeing in the picture and why I was concerned about it. Oh and just so you know 99.9% of the time I do wear my "retired hat" so don't worry if I show up at your camp sight for some coffee (or other adult beverage)

Happy Camping and fun Modding to all

I have never used a dishwater on a boat, in a camper, and I mostly hand wash at home as we have a third sink that hold two drying racks rather well.

Still I did see a two drawer dishwasher on a 59' yacht and loved the idea.

For a small camper that you are restoring, why not add whatever features you like. I expect it would hold up fine to travel

From a weight perspective it doesn't make sense.

I don't like the idea of using a toilet seat for a cutting board either. <grin>

port a potty leaks, odours?

I have to admit very little experience with the device.

Does a Port a potty leak/splash? I would have guessed the seals would do a good enough job for liquids.

As for odours, I agree, it can be dangerous to have a "loaded" port a potty, near the galley where it can make food preparation an uncomfortable activity.

Any feed back from port a potty users is much appreciated.

As for using it as a cutting board!!! OMG no!, the counter surface will be covering all these. The set um is only me mocking in parts and components for measuring and detailed design...

Thanks all.
