If the damage is limited to gelcoat and not structural, there is no reason you couldn't just clean and wax it for now and use it for a season... or ten. Maybe a little fill and touch-up paint if it's deep.
The previous owner of my
Scamp had hit something on the lower front apron, just curbside of the tongue. Bent the glass enough to expose fibers, but it didn't break. Eventually I may patch it up and apply a chip guard coating across the lower front. But not yet. Maybe my standards are too low... LOL
If you're a perfectionist, or just aching for a project, paint away! But as soon as you start using it, it's going to get little bumps and bruises. You're not planning to keep it as a garage queen, are you?
