"Escape Pod" (1972 Cloud)

Hello everyone,
Just wanted to add my name to the list of new (to me) egg owners and members of FGRV. I found my 1972 Cloud back in August after what I like to think of as a 24 year search. I fell in love with Fiberglass campers back when my aunt and uncle bought a scamp when I was 12 years old, I thought it was the greatest camper I had ever seen and have wanted one of my own ever since. I bought my first camper about 6 years ago, a 32' Skyline Nomad which I don't tow around but keep in a permanent spot on a lake about an hour from where I live and it is what I refer to as my "Base Camp" or "Mother Ship" and this year I found my Cloud which is now my "Escape Pod" because well it reminds me of the escape pods you see people escaping from the defeated space ships in sci-fi movies plus it really is my escape pod, I have already escaped many times with it already and look forward to many many more adventures in the future.
I found my pod pretty much by luck when I was talking to a coworker about how much I would love to have a tiny little camper that was easy and economical to pull around, just so happened that during our conversation a car drove by pulling a 13' Scamp and I pointed it out and said that is exactly what I want right there. My coworker replied oh that’s what you want, I have one of those sitting out in the woods behind my farm, I haven’t thought about it in years. I didn't even need to see it, I just said SOLD and the next week it was mine.
A little bit of advice...if you ever have the chance to buy a camper from anyone who says they have one for sale that has been sitting in the woods behind the farm...be prepared to do a LOT of cleaning and work on it before you can start using it. lol. It took me a good month to get my Cloud up and running and a nice chunk of my bank account and now it is in very useable condition, not perfect yet as I do want to add a battery system and a solar panel to it yet but for now it is working wonderfully and even though it had sat in the woods for years surprisingly most everything still worked.
Wow...I guess I am a bit long winded but I just love talking about my "Escape Pod", I have Eggfever bad. I am very glad to be a part of this group and have been utilizing the forums for repair and update advice almost daily.
Thanks again,
Tyler

Hi Tyler! Thanks for sharing your story. I think many of us were in the same boat... the searching for years part. But once you find an egg... NIRVANA!

hi tyler---may you have many happy years together with your escape pod! a guy we ran into in northern new brunswick had found his fgrv in a very similar way and it took him a full winter of scrubbing to get it ready for spring. he was so thrilled to have the camper that he said it didn't feel like "work" at all. happy trails to you!

solar Cloud

Hi, Tyler!

I was really interested in the fact that your trailer is a Cloud because I want to name ours ----when we finally get it ---- "Floating Cloud." The history on yours is interesting.
I, too, want a solar panel, or two. I saw in a book where someone cut a couple of pieces of plywood, say 4' x 4', and put one on top of the other and bolted them in the middle. Then the solar panel is set up on top (sitting up with legs on one end) and is moved with the sun on the plywood, which acts like a lazy susan.

Hope to see Cloud some time.
Cathy

Thanks Cathy. Keep me posted on your solar panel installment, I am very interested to see if it works out. I finally bought my first deep cell battery about 3 weeks ago and used it for a camping outing and it worked wonderful. Only thing I charge with it right now is my phone, my kids DS, and I ran a light for a bit and it never ran out of juice so I was happy about that. Now all I need is a solar panel and I am ready to go.

Thumbs up

¡Hola! from Las Cruces, New Mexico. Welcome to the Forum. Congrats on fulfilling your Great Quest.

Wow! A Cloud made in St. Cloud. (Manufactured in St. Cloud, Minnesota, as early as 1965 (possibly 1961). With vertical seam of the two molded halves, the Cloud is similar to the Burro and U-Haul.) Photos: http://www.fiberglassrv.com/gallery/...php?i=305&c=17
Neat looking trailer.

Hope to see some pics of your's soon. Enjoyed your story, not long winded at all.

Enjoy!

I thought I would attach a few pictures of my "Escape Pod". I may have already posted some of these but not on this thread.

Cute! I like campers with matching tow vehicles.

Slick looking! And you've got just enough of a matching theme going on that if you change tow vehicles it won't cost you a fortune to change the colored items on the trailer

Nice looking trailer! Use it in the best of health.

About 10 years ago, I saw my first egg camper - a Casita - riding down the freeway. I was just fascinated with the size and shape. It took me several years, but my first choice for my first trailer was fiberglass.

Welcome to the forum.
