Well, first of all, I used a polyurethane enamel, with an epoxy primer undernieth it. Good stuff.
As for prep, I've found that fibreglass trailers tend to absorb contaminates in the air, making the primer fish-eye. So this time I
power washed the trailer as good as I could. It had been painted before, but not very well. You see a lot of red primer on the first pic - that's where the white
paint was coming off, & I wasn't done washing yet!
I fixed the cracks in the fibreglass with the usual fibreglass cloth repair kit, & gel where I could get away with it. 120 grit sandpaper on a 6" orbital sander. Had to use 80 grit in some spots. Put polyester putty where needed, re-sanded with 120. Primed the whole thing. No fisheyes, thankfully. Had there been, I'd have had to sand the whole thing down with 240. On the third picture, you'll see that there was some blue sprayed on the front bottom. That was a tintable stoneguard that I sprayed there ahead of time. (you add 10% of your paint to the milky-coloured stoneguard) Then if your topcoat chips, you don't really see it. You know these trailers get beat up a bit there on gravel roads!
So hopefully, with good prepping, products & procedures, you won't get any chipping or flaking!
