Storage under front sofa - 71 Trillium

I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but I'm going to ask anyway as I can't seem to find it in a search.

Has anyone added a cupboard door under the front sofa in their egg so that you have easier access to the front storage areas under the sofa? I'm thinking of doing this as I find it to be a pain in the rear to lift the sofa cushions and then the wooden panels to get access to underneath. Would this compromise the structure of the sofa?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Maxine

Anyplace that I have cut access holes inside our Uhaul I have reinforced the area with plywood behind the opening

That's probably a good idea! Thanks!

Maxine, A factory option from Trillium was to put doors in the front of the gaucho, (sofa). Take a look at the serial number list:
http://www.fiberglassrv.com/forums/f...tml#post521762

The last four digits of the serial number link to what ever pictures of the unit are available.

Just don't cut the indent in the front of the gaucho. That is basically a support post. A 71 may not have that indent. You can put a wood frame around the inside of the opening you cut, but Trillium didn't. But, if you don't have that indent, it is probably a good idea.

Thanks for all the good info, Dave! I'm not sure if I have an indent, but I'll check once I get home

I've added 8 openings in the fiberglass of our trailer: 3 large drawers (1'x1' openings), 2 small drawers (4" x 1' openings) and 2 cabinet door openings (1'x1.5' and 6"x1') to the face of our fiberglass in our 1991 Scamp 16 without adding reinforcement.

I'm sure reinforcement would not hurt but it seemed to work well without it in the Scamp.

I never cut through the corner radius or even get near to it. In four years I haven't had a single problem.

Thanks! I'm not super handy, but managed to get new flooring in last night. I'm sure I can figure out how to make an opening and door

Becareful, the depth of the under cushion lockers is NOT all the way to the floor. Open the center door and make sure you don't cut below the bottom the lockers into the under the trailer world.
That said. I store stuff very seldom used in those two locations. Jack, tools, reflector flares, etc are stored next to the street side compartment. Beside the door is stored chocks, legos, and the bar for the stabilizers. By putting stuff that not generally not used in those places it keeps the number of times access is needed to a minimum. I think I've gotten into the one by stove (street side) about once every couple of years. The other one (by the door) twice per camp site. That can be twice in 2 days or twice in 30 days.

Byron, In Trilliums, the inside of the gaucho is level with the floor. Actually, since the plywood in the floor does not go all the way into the gaucho, there are places where the floor of the gaucho is below the floor of the trailer.

We rarely use the top access of the couch or dinette for anything. We have pull out bins under our both the couch and dinette. The bins sit in shallow drawers with the drawers on roller slides.

OK, for some reason when I first read the OP I thought Scamp was there someplace, upon review I see it's not. Good point.

Max

I have a 72 Trillium, I don't have the indent. I cut a doorway out of mine, afterwards I framed around the inside. This will help support the seat and give you something to mount your hinges too.

If you make it a drawer instead of a hinged opening, there's no need for hinges and you can see what's in the drawer. We make low drawers and place a plastic bin in the drawer.

Hi Norm,

Do you have pictures of your setup?

Thanks,
