HAM Radio in a 16' Scamp Deluxe

I am an avid Ham, Call is AF0XX - a play on my last name (Fox), and I am in the thought process of installing my Icom IC706MK2G.

Are there any other hams out there that have made a XYL approved installation of radio and HF/VHF antennas? I build my own screwdriver antennas which I am thinking of mounting on the tongue.

I am set up with dual batteries on the tongue, one for Scamp and another for radio that can be switched to Scamp.

Hi Frank,

The 706 is a small radio and portable, so I would suggest maybe operating from a small add-a-room outside of the Scamp. Are you primarily phone? In that case, you may want to set up in the Scamp to avoid bothering others in the campground unless you intend to primarily boondock.

Also, I would think the rear bumper might be an easier setup for your screwdriver.

Sounds like fun and I hope to work you someday.

New to ham, so I will follow the thread and learn. We moved from a Casita to a class A a year ago but I still love these little guys. The class a offers the same issues for mounting an antenna.

We are just using a couple of handheld radios until we see where we want to go with this adventure. Our primary interest at the moment is emergency services.

Hey Frank

Sneaky call you have there from here in Zero land on the left coast!

My solution,camp by myself! Ha!

I carry a little box I made that is a Pelican case with a 7000 and an FT-90 in it. I can power from batteries or A.C. and I don't use a Tuner usually.

I usually use a Buddi-Pole or something else on a Tripod or just shoot a wire over trees so I am not tied to my camping spot directly aside from the feedline. The Buddi-Pole is pretty easy to make resonant which is why I carry it and mine has the knock down arms so it all goes into a foot long case.

As you likely already know a Scamp is already a little Faraday cage with the foil based insulation in the walls so not even an HT really gets out well for around campground use in my experience.

I would look to using some kind of pass through just to get a connection point outside and then just get something in the air if the site mandates that or go NVIS if you have the space but I will tell you I really like the Buddi system in general and it packs down really small too.

I also carry the Super Antenna MP-1 with my 817 and it is not nearly as effective and I have tried various screwdrivers too but without a great ground plane they just rarely reach out for me?

Good Luck.

I agree with Ed. Do a bulkhead pass through connector and an external antenna of your choice. The 706 can be mounted with only the control head and mic visible. Decide where you want to operate from, like the dinette and mount the head o a bulkhead stalk or ram mount.

There's a lengthy thread for Hams in the Hobbies and Passions forum here on FiberglassRV: http://www.fiberglassrv.com/forums/f...dio-42596.html
