ParkLiner - remote battery posts

ParkLiner has this new elegant tongue mounted battery box. The only problem is you have to remove the propane tanks to get to the top of the battery box, then you have to remove the difficult-to-remove screws they use to hold the top down, and then you can get to the batteries! Hmm.

I already re-positioned the top (they mounted it crooked at the factory!) then drilled and tapped 5/16-24 holes to make it easy to attach and remove. But I was concerned with the difficulty of getting to the batteries, so did something many hot rodders do - installed remote battery posts. These can be used for my trickle charger to keep the batteries topped off during the winter, but could also be used with a solar panel, or electric tongue jack, just with alligator clips. Easy, and no wrestling with propane tanks and all to do it.

I had some scrap aluminum angle around, drilled the 1-1/4" holes needed to mount the battery posts with a cheap step drill bit from Harbor Freight, and mounted it with the same self-tapping screws ParkLiner uses for all their frame-mounted stuff.

I still need to liquid-electric-tape all my connections, but will do that Saturday when I do all the other unprotected crimp connections under the trailer. It is amazing to me that ParkLiner (namely Chandler) doesn't seem to think these under carriage crimped connections need protection. I disagree.

Here's some pics...

Thanks Dave. Nothing is tight yet, except the original battery post nuts, and I still need to clean up that mount - I can see pencil lines! Now all I need is an electric tongue jack and solar collector. Actually I went through this so I don't have to bring the batteries in this winter. I can trickle charge them in place.

I would bring the batteries in where it's warm. I only leave batteries in equipment that I'll need to use in cold weather, like tractors.

with my solar panel keeping a charge on my batteries they should be ok installed right? If we get a decent weekend Im not opposed to an impromptu camping weekend in January lol.

Looks good Frank! Maybe some kind of lockable box over those remote terminals?

That's what I think. If they're on a trickle charge, why move them? They're a bear to get to!

What kinda lockable box Deryk? Gotta think about that one.

Thanks!

Frank

Just something so folks don't mess with it and protected from the elements.

What gauge wire did you use and did you use an inline fuse? If yes, how many amps?

10 gauge was all I had at home Huck, so that's what I used. I did not use an in-line fuse. That's probably a good idea. What would you think? I would want something that would work with a 100 amp solar panel.

Thanks,

Frank
