Wow, Lex!
Do I read that correctly? One of the older Extase models is 1500 Euros? Add USD1500 to ship to the states and for about USD3000 I could have one of those cool Extase BIODs?
Sounds too good to be true! :sunny

It is which, Lex? Too good to be true? Or, EUR1500?
I'm guessing it's the latter since you used the :thumb
(This is very, very tempting... and we could swing by Greece and see your new backyard! :jester)

Yes, the latter.
And yes, I know what a 'rhetorical question' is ('retorische vraag').
Tomorrow I'll go and get the trailer home.
Next saturday we'll go to Belgium for a week. Hope the weather will stay as it is. It's very nice for the time of the year, above 20 C, dry (too for the farmers and the garden).

Biod
This question is for LEX and also for those that have Biods in use in the USA (anyone?). I'm justifying importing used Biods.
1. How is a Biod better than a Casita/Scamp (16') RV-wise? I notice on some Euro sites that some Biods have gorgeous light colored wood interiors and also stylistic and functional improvements but wouldn't European hardware be significantly different than American RV Hardware (Doors, windows and appliances)? Wouldn't it be tough finding replacements for Hardware that went Kaput? Is it the same type of electrical RV connectors and mechanical parts? Definitely the voltage converter has to be swapped out.
2. Are Biods still being made? I went to the Biod site I think (please help me out LEX) -- but looks like they stopped making them in 2002 (?). The (current) pictures were of a very modern factory with separate cabinetry, fibreglass layup and upholstery sections.
3. What is the price-list for used/new Biods so we can sort of see the level of equipment we're getting? Is there an English site which lists price levels vis-a-vis equipment that you get for that price.

Here's the Biod page ....
And the machine translation...
:)
"Regularly us the question is asked: "why a high-quality caravan in a
social workshop?". For that we must in fact in the historie. Approximately 35 years suffered stalks we for third parties caravans
together. By a bankruptcy of the constituent we came for the choice: other work
zoeken or himself continue with production. Particularly the veelzijdigheid of the kinds of work which necessary
is compose caravans, the largest beweegreden has been continue;
moreover were a lot many profession people present those with much
pleasure to their own caravan savages work there within our internal
target group. The Executive Board has then decided to the BIOD give a chance.
Unfortunately it is by the changing legislation very difficult present
at dage the skill discretion within our internal target group continue
guarantee. (Future) the intake of Sw-medewerkers are of a another level then that
we got used products. Because of this we have been among others obliged our current
accompany people in transferring their skill discretion to (future)
the intake. Moreover it is important look at to another production method.
In 1999, we the department has considerably slimmed. The cause was a decreasing question which it was caused by conducting
too long the same model. There was little renewal. Beginning 2000 is private a new bring model on the market. These had satisfy not only to the wishes of the market, but also are
appropriate within the possibilities of (future) the intake and for
eyes staande line production."

Hi Bill,
The BIOD on the photo is a 1993 model.
To answer the big question quickly, there is a hidden website with info on the actual models. (not up-to-date but quite useful)
http://members.home.nl/l.h.meuldijk/biodbv...glish/index.htm
It used to be the website for info on the trailers. I made it for them just for fun. October 1 2002 they decided to construct a 'professional' website of their own (read the pop-up ;-). Nothing happened since. :-(
The factory is small (upto a hundred units a year) and is part of a bigger entity, a 'social workshop', employing disabled people. The get money from the government, but as we are 'Americanising' they have more and more hold up their own trousers. Which means they have to earn their own money, which implies more managers etc.
The axle and frame comes from Alko (( http://www.alko.de)), the floor from a floor factory, the body from a fiberglass factory, the wooden furniture in house, the fridge is by Dometic ( http://www.dometic.com), the heating from Truma ( http://www.truma.com). The window unit includes an integrated flyscreen and darkening curtain.
At last BIOD assembles the parts to a whole.
More to follow later.

Thanks for the reply LEX
Checked out all the sites and the OEM sites are excellent suppliers to BIOD especially ALKO. I can't believe how advanced and lightweight their Karavan-frames are (aluminum channels)-- but expensive I bet!
Some questions again...(this time I'll focus them for your ease of answering),
1. What is the FOB factory cost (in Euros) of a High Class Biod Nomade 2003 model (TD?)
2. I understand rough Cost and freight to Los Angeles/San Diego would be 1500~2000 Euros?
3. Can these things be modified for 110 volts shore supply? (I'm guessing only a swap of the voltage converter....)
4. Are there stateside modifications needed and are there USA Biod users already? (maybe our Mods can answer this please...??)

BIOD dimensions rock

Wow, the headroom in both models is 202 cm (over 6'6")! I know the Dutch are tall people (never understood why their restrooms are so small) but compare that generous headroom to small U.S. trailers that have 185 cm or less. Send a BIOD to me NOW!! :banana
One question: are the brakes controlled mechanically or electrically?

Hi Bill,
About the frame: it is not aluminium, but galvanised steel.
Question 1: I think you found the prices. 19% btw means value added tax.
Question 2: that was a rough figure of a man who imports vintage cars from america.
Question 3: I suppose your guess is right.
Question 4: I really don't know. No as far as I know.
Hi Eddy, the brakes are controlled mechanically.

:wave Rather than let this ''age off the board'', I've moved it to General Chat.
The information about buying European and transporting to North America is worth saving, no? (Lex's link in the first message did have pics and specs on a dozen BIODs, of different ages and models. Now, check out his History page!)

Lex! :chatter
Did they build very many of the BIOD Expert (1974)?? It looks like it has the cool, curved window of the Extase, but with quite a bit more space.

Hi Mary, I am told 37 Experts have been built. It is in the history section of my web site.
It is indeed a longer version of the Extase (about 1 m = 3 ft 4)
