fridge recommendations?

I have what is probably the originally-installed basic dorm fridge in my 1980 Burro, and it worked okay until it up and died last summer and started making warm air instead of cold.

I want to replace it with something that is about the same footprint - a 1.7 cubic-foot unit. I could go with another shore-power dorm fridge, or with something more RV friendly with something that will run off 12v.

I'm not all that interested in hooking up propane or in worrying about lighting the propane power etc. I'm 100% fine with not having much in the way of refrigeration while off the grid.

I noted that there are a couple of under-$200 models out there which is appealing, but reviews on them are fairly poor.

Anyway, who's got a very small 12v-compatible fridge and do you like what you have?

check out truckfridge . it's what the truckers use . they are more expensive ($700) but worth the price .

Check out amazon for a 12 volt whynter FM-45G it is a real fridge with a compress.
I have one and just love it, don't have to be level to use it and can have food as cold as you like. It was $431.00 shipped to me

The 12v fridge will keep your food cold while you are driving too.

I'd stay away from the "coolers" that use a peltier junction plate and get one with a real compressor. More $ but they work a lot better.

I have had an Engel 35 qt fridge for a few years now - some of the best money I have ever spent on camping gear. It stays in the back of one of my Land Rovers and runs off a 12V power socket. It only draws about 1.5 amps and will freeze ice cream. They come in various sizes (17, 35, 45, 60 and 80 qts) and can ebe used for runs to teh grocery store, road trips and camping. The 35's are around $700 but friends of mine have had theirs for almost ten years with zero issues. The 45 qt is an almost perfect size for a couple on an extended camping trip. You get in the habit of replacing a cold drink with a warm one when you retrieve one from the fridge. Never worry about ice again.

They also come with a120V cord for use with shore power or to get it cold when you first load it up the night before you leave.

You should also consider the Waeco 12 volt portable fridges. We had a CF-35 (35 litres) in our sailboat for years and loved it. It can run as a freezer or fridge but not at the same time. They use the very reliable Danfoss compressor and draw very little power. I have seen used units on eBay for $200 to $300. A new one will cost quite a bit more.
