New forum for Covid-19 Topics - README

Please read carefully:

Because of the very high interest and posting activity regarding COVID-19, the site team has established this temporary new forum to contain all threads related to this topic. We have moved existing threads on this topic to this new forum and will continue to move posts and new threads to this area of the forum, regardless of where they were initially posted.

All Community Rules will be strictly enforced in this forum. Posts in violation of the rules may be deleted without notification based on the judgment of the moderators. Please be especially cautious about posting politically charged content and be sure to report problem posts.

Covid Forum Special Rules:
All regular FGRV forum discussion guidelines apply in this section of the forum plus these additional rules:

Covid topics must be directly related to RVing, camping and travels concerns for RVers. These might include border crossings, campground safety regs, covid related reservation issues health management while camping or on the road.

There are many places on the internet to discuss pandemic politics and personal liberty but we are an RVing and camping board. General posts about vaxxed or not, personal restrictions or not and general whingeing would not be allowed. Political debate and vaccine safety debate will be off-limits.

Posts that exhibit fear-mongering, politically charged statements or other anti-social behavior may result in the author’s posting privileges being restricted.

There has been a lot of very useful information and perspective shared here on this topic, but unfortunately also a good bit that doesn't align with forum rules. Please respect your fellow members by thinking through this before posting:

- Is it factual?
- Is it helpful?
- Is it kind?

If you have any questions about this, feel free to message any moderator.

Wishing good health to all,

The Site Team

Apparently, we now have a large number of testing kits but not so large that they can be used by people without symptoms. Since approximately half of the people who get Wuhan Covid_19 do not have symptoms, this is potentially dangerous for those of us who are senior citizens. One of my in-laws got exposed to the virus and called us to let us know that they are breaking off contact except for phone conversations for several weeks. They do not have symptoms but could still be contagious. Thus, the stay at home warning is useful for avoiding infection.

One good way of listening is to listen to both President Trump and to the contrasting views of his two doctors on the panel. Contrast and Comparison. I heard an excellent presentaion by Dr. Fauci on WMAL where he explained why the medical and political viewpoints have to be different. He said that it is not that he disagrees with the president but his mission as a medical researcher and infectious disease specialist has to be different from the political persons. Senate, House and the President, are elected to make political tradeoffs. That kind of discussion needs to take place and this new forum may be one spot for it to take place so that we can provide rational input both to our doctors and our politicians.

I have had difficulty with both sets of individuals as this has progressed. My local congressman thinks that his political views are the only way to approach the issue (suprise - not). My doctor also thinks that the medical views of the CDC are the only way to approach the issue. EG, he does not include the medical views of the Chinese, Korean and Taiwanese equivalents of the CDC. He does not iike medical studies that are not double blinded large scale randomized control studies that are the "Gold Standard" of medical research.

As a retired researcher, I know the difference and also know that if my life depended on it, I would take the results of the non-gold standard studies that each individually point to the same answer with >90% success. This does NOT mean that those studies are correct only that they are "probably" correct. Who knows what the real meaning of "probably" is in this context.

One can contrast the approaches taken by two governers of two different states - both of the same party. One asked for huge quantities of the "promising" medicine to try out. The other banned the use of the medicine outside the hospital setting on the grounds that it was not proven. Time will tell which approach is "correct". In the mean time, I am glad that I am not in either state but in a relatively low hit state.

Work from home sounds like more fun than it is. Politicians spin, some more than others. Doctors have a different mindset and goal. Churchill provided leadership, didn't try to lead soldiers in the field. Military officers with that expertise did that job.

I have a feeling history will not be all that kind in its judgment of some actions or decisions if this goes anywhere near the results of the pandemic flu of 1918 which was a similar virus. An additional 1.4% +/- of the US population died in the year 1918. On one hand ones own odds are not that bad for being in the small percentage that dies in one of these things. On the other hand given the current population that is almost 5 million people.

Hopefully we will be able to slow the infection rate to where our excellent health care workers and medical infrastructure can save lives. We will end up owing them and the people who are making it so we can still go to the store and purchase food, medicine and other essentials. Nice to say thank you to them if you have the occasion to be benefitting from their efforts.

I'm already getting a bit skeptical about at least early summer camping. Hopefully by June this will have run itself down a bit.

Testing a high percentage of the population so we can apply the proven method of test, isolate, and contact track would be great. If not it doesn't change the best defense we as individuals can mount is just stay home and avoid social contact. With days of being contagious and essentially symptom free social distancing is the only thing that makes sense.

Beside dear wife will get that look in her eye and says a most emphatic "no" whenever I mention going to the store. I can go to the park and walk the dog around the loop. Not many people and we can keep our distance from each other. I mean other people!

Although this goes on too long I think one of us will social distance the other to the garden shed.

Good idea Janet!

I am very happy to see this new forum topic added, and sincerely look forward to a time when it is no longer longer needed.

I do hope that we can avoid politics here (but love jerry’s Post about that new testing kit ) and stick to updates on camping sites & problems we need to consider this summer should we need to travel.

Most of us are at home and it would be good to compare notes on practical problems we encounter & ways to solve while staying safe. I’ve always found this site to be a tremendous knowledge base.

Wishing everyone good health - mental & physical.

I do hope that everyone will pay attention to the need for social distancing, and for staying home, so that we all can be safe. And I trust that most folks are going to be sensible and take good care, especially us seniors who are at higher risk. That said, as a full timer, my home IS my camper. I don't have any other home. And it is tough to find a safe place to camp right now with so many of the state parks and now even national parks closing their campgrounds. Another full timer I'm in touch with was happily ensconced at a national park campground for 2 weeks, hunkered down there as long as they would let her. They even suspended paying for campsites at some point. Now she has been told she has to leave because they are closing the campground and wonders how this is going to make anyone safer. And yes, I understand that most national parks and forests and BLM lands are remote, far from full medical care. And if someone were to get very sick and need to be taken to a hospital, the rangers who would have to transport them would get potentially exposed, put at risk, and have to be quarantined for 2 weeks. So I understand the reasoning. However, for full timers, where should we shelter in place? I can't afford to spend a month in an RV park, and they are sometimes so tightly packed, I'm not sure they are safe.

My own situation is complicated by the fact I'm a retired RN and work one day a week remotely with patients on the phone. This requires excellent wifi, which I'm not going to find on BLM land. Or even in every RV park. Challenging times! Lucky for me, I am currently staying in a cousin's driveway where her wifi extends nicely, and we can maintain our 6' of social distancing. Really don't want to overstay my welcome here, though. But where to go next?

Thank you Janet for being the adult in the room addressing a very serious topic but some children don't comprehend your post or just can't behave. Try posting in all caps maybe.as highlighting does't work and just delete all political opinions period.

I really liked your post. I read an interesting view of sex during the Corona virus on DW. When I got to the no from your wife I expected a different "NO" response! Try to do the best you can without driving each other crazy, I think the garden is a good idea. Cheers from Toronto we are under "strict" social distancing orders which are almost unenforceable unless we bring in the army and even then NOT.

P.S. Now go wash your hands!
We have removed a number of posts from this thread that are out of bounds.

To be clear - posts that are insulting, derogatory, incendiary or politically loaded are OUT OF BOUNDS.

I understand that we are all on edge and that many are sidelined by enforced social distancing BUT that's no excuse for anti-social posting on this forum.

One further note - we have had several reports of private messages that are also stepping over this line. Forum rules apply to every corner of the board. Report these problem posts to the site team (red triangle in the top right of a PM) and we will take action.

Do better folks!

Thanks for your efforts. It will be hard to keep politics out of these discussions since it's had so much to do with where we are now and apparently will have much to do with how we operate going forward. There's not a lot of RV'n going on, we need some good restoration threads!

I agree that it's difficult but we must find ways to discuss this without hurling insults and instead with an "abundance of courtesy"
