Trailer: 1985 Companion

Greetings from Indiana,
I've enjoyed reading this site the past few days as I comtemplated buying a camper. I just bought a "Companion" fiberglass camper and wondered if anyone on this board owns one. It looks a lot like a Uhaul, but has some different details.
I would like to learn more about this camper and would especially appreciate scans of documents such as manuals, etc.. I saw a few pictures online, but would like to see more if anyone knows of any sites.
Thanks,
Gary

Congrat's! Too cute, I don't know of anyone, but that means nothing so hang in there and hopefully someone can think of a few members with them.
Have you clicked on the Companion link on the home page? there are a few pic's there as well. I am sure we all would love to see inside pic's of your little cutie! Enjoy! Robin

Thanks, Robin. The Companion link shows more squared-off and larger campers than mine. I did just find a Companion like mine owned by Karen on this board. It's in much better shape than mine though; a very sharp camper! I attached an interior shot of mine. The carpeted walls will be among my first conversions.

If you look in the Albums it looks like a newer version of the 1973 Cloud trailer. The color is even the same.

Gary, and congratulations on acquiring a really neat looking FGRV. Now the fun of making it truly your own (mods, upgrades, etc) begins. We wish you safe journeys and many, many happy memories! Regards, L 'n D

Congratulations, Gary! I am sure you will enjoy this trailer. Certainly looks like a UHaul except for that V in the front. It has the same details along the side though where the name is.

Wow, Gary, that's curious how different your Companion is from the ones in our Albums. It would be interesting indeed to find out more information on the company: did they buy another trailer's stock and customize the interiors? Did they do their own manufacture, yet completely revised their molds as styles became more, umm, angular? Hopefully somebody knows something, and the pieces of the story can be collected here!
Oh, and welcome to FiberglassRV.com. We're glad you found us (and let us know that you found us!)

Gary, I will conjecture here a little. I don't know anything about Companion... but I do have some UHaul experience. It looks for all the world like one of the five manufacturers who subcontracted to UHaul to build trailers may have gone out on their own for a short time. The frame and body are, for the most part, UHaul. The interior, of course, is completely different. Since UHauls were built in '84 and '85, the timing is too close to be coincidental.
A little sleuth work on the web will get you the names and locations of the companies who built the UHauls, and perhaps you can find a manufacturer location that matches if you at least have that info about your Companion.

I am so excited to see another Companion !!!! Your interior is identical to mine but the lettering on the outside of mine is raised. I sent you a PM. I will get busy digging out some pictures for you. And if you think yours needs a lot of work...........just wait til you see what I started with.

The conjecture over on uhaulcamper.com was that it was someone using the UHaul molds. Apparently, there is knowledge of this happening. The front details are slightly different, as well as the size of the windows. And, of course, the inside is quite different. However, the molding where the name goes is the same as the UHaul but different from the Burro or Cloud.
Karen, your trailer is really cute! Of course, I am kinda partial to trailers that look like that anyway, being former owner of a Burro and current owner of a UHaul.
Keep posting pix of the redo, Gary. And let us know what you find out about the past ownership.

Thanks, campers! I'm looking forward to getting some cleaning and fixing done to the old girl. This site will be very helpful!
