1985 uhaul

Anyone know what a 13' 85 uhaul is worth in average shape. And what should I look for before buying ?

Hard to say - what is "average shape"? I paid $3500 for my '85 UHaul eight years ago. Put a little work into it, put almost 25,000 great miles on it. It's a very robust design and still in good shape. I wouldn't part with it today for that $3500.

I paid $4500 for mine that is in great shape. I did not have to do any thing to it but change the curtains. So I guess to answer your question I would say any where from $1800 to $3500 would be a fare price.

As with anything for sale you need to ask yourself... what is it worth to YOU to own it? When was the last time you saw a comparable trailer for sale in your area? Are you willing to wait or drive many miles to get a different one? There is location, location, location when it comes to molded trailers too... and here you just thought it had to do with stick built homes

Be sure to download and print out the Buyers Check List. It gives information on items to look for... although the "quality" of mods, features and "shape" is completely subjective.

I paid $4000 for mine, it didn't really need anything and the previous owner had done some cool modifications. Make sure you check the frame well, mine had some rot in the front that I had to fix that I had not noticed at the time of purchase. I think anywhere between 3,000 - $4000 for a clean one ready to camp in is a pretty good deal. I have seen them for as little as $1000, and there certainly are some bargains out there too if you are patient.

Kirkman got a good deal considering he didn't have to do anything to his trailer, we paid $1800, think we also got a good deal, but ours needs a little work. Apparently it's common to uhauls that the windows leak, ours do, and we will probably have to replace the rear one. A lot of things on the Uhauls are unique to them, spare wheels are hard to get, wheel bearings are sealed units but available from Uhaul, I bought a set. I replaced the tires right away too. Original tail lights are not available but a conversion is. The wiring is a little different than most trailers. However the trailers are well made, heavy duty frames, double wall construction on the fiberglass. Anything that can be removed says "property of Uhaul, not to be sold". Parts & repair manuals are on this website and have been a big help to me in repairing the furnace and correcting a 110 wiring problem. Lot of good info on this site, and I've talked to a couple other uhaul owners and got some great info from them. One interesting thing I learned is that the heavy duty rear bumper is actually aluminum, thanks to Bruce for that info, I never would have guessed that! Bob

Bruce: Maybe the one you know of is the one Rob is looking at, but I haven't told anybody about it. While we were looking it over, someone did stop and ask if it was for sale, but he didn't like the price. Strange how it sets there with no sign on it.

Look at the frame, axle, and any appliances. It's probably a safe bet the windows need to be remounted unless its already been done. My wiring was totally shot. That's hard to assess unless you get into the guts of the trailer. You might be able to see something under the sink or by pulling up on the cargo liners under the seats.

Regards,

Matt
