1988 Toyota Sunrader

I just picked up a molded fiberglass Toyota Sunrader. LOL, I believe it still qualifies as a molded fiberglass RV. I have had a few of the Dolphin, or Seabreeze style Toyota motorhomes before. I like them for what they are (slow and hard to take side trips without breaking camp). Has anyone on here ever had a Sunrader? I need to find some trim and a few other things for the shell.

Hi Steve. I have a Bigfoot trailer, but have my eye on one of these as well (82 witht he R22), or perhaps in place of. Have you been out in yours? What do you think? I look at the engine size (2.4L) and the fact it is a manual transmission (I don't know if this one is the 4 or 5-speed yet) and wonder if there would be any problems with the weight it would be carrying? I like your comment on "slow and hard to take side-trips". The one I'm peeking at has a lot of upgrades to the RV side of it - including solar, batteries - but I'm not certain of the mechanicals yet. Since you have experience with the older Toyota MH's, what do you think of the Sunrader? I am an old(er) & retired, and am very happy with "slow" as long as that doesn't mean "too much work on the drive train" - mountains of BC! I am mechanically inclined and can do a lot of the routine stuff myself - and some of the not quite so routine as well), so I'm not afraid of an old vehicle (besides - it's a Toyota!!). Thanks for your insight. Cheers.

If it does have a fifth gear, I doubt you would ever use fifth gear with this unit. I've owned Toyota trucks with the 22r engine. The 22R engine is very tough. Just be sure to adjust the valves every 30000 miles. I never owned one of these motor homes. but sure would like to have one and live in the slow lane. The rear axles were origionaly dual wheel set ups and they did have a reputation of axle failure. Many of the dually axles have been replaced with heavy duty axles with single wheels.

That's the second SUNRADER post this week. It will be nice to see them back on the road.
