A/C recommendation’s for new build Bigfoot

I’m looking to order a new Bigfoot 25B25RT and the standard a/c is a Coleman Mach 10 . Options are a Truma Aventa from the factory or a Houghton Rec Pro from the dealer. I live in Texas so I want a good reliable and quiet unit . Have heard from one source the the Houghton is not as good in humid conditions. I’m leaning Houghton but would like input from real world users . Also was told to get regular profile unit versus the low profile because they are quieter . Have had some experience with Coleman low profile ducted units in my 5thwheel. They are fairly quiet. Any input is welcome.

We just contracted for a 25RQ and we are getting the Houghton a/c. It has a remote control and a drying feature that removes moisture from the air. I’m not sure of the model however the sales person did mention this feature. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info. We are going with Houghton also on our build which we are in process of sorting out . One dealer I believe in Georgia told me the Houghton don’t do as well in humid conditions. Haven’t heard that from anyone else so don’t know if that was to try and sway us from the Houghton.
The dealer we will order ours from did say to get a regular profile unit versus low profile as regular profile units are quieter than low profile units . I believe it’s the way the compressor is mounted and maybe different fan type .

I believe this is the unit they probably are putting in. We worked with Paige at Trailerworld and I highly recommend her and her dealership. She also owns a Bigfoot. We live in Texas also, Houston and camp a lot in the south.

Thanks , Paige is who we are working with and currently working on order . Probably order trailer and decide on solar / lithium batteries setup to be installed before we pick it up .

Just ordered our 25B25RT from Paige today . Hopefully a March build is still available.

Dido!

I'm finalizing my options as well, and the Truma Combi Comfort plus and Truma A/C are at the top of my ya or nay list! Truma's made the heat/water units for many years and have been used in Europe for a long time, but fairly new in the States.

If I decide on the Truma Combi Comfort plus, I'll go with the Truma A/C, it's my understanding the A/C comes with a soft start, and also ties into the same thermostat.

I'm fairly certain I'm going with a 12 volt fridge, but still researching what's the best battery voltage solar system for supplying the A/C and fridge with juice! Some say go 48 volt batteries, instead of 12 volt, because of wire size, cost, and efficiency.

I've heard the stock A/C is excessively loud on the Bigfoot, and from what I've been able to gather, it looks like the Truma has a smaller profile inside the trailer, allowing for more headroom.

Good Luck

I ordered the Truma aqua go tankless water heater. I’ve had one before and liked it . I’m also getting a Houghton A/C that the dealer will install. I was told the regular profile units in any brand are quieter than low profile units . I think it has to do with how compressor is mounted and also blower design. The dealer will also install a solar system when they receive the trailer and after I decide on what I want . It will be cheaper than the Bigfoot option and I’m told a better system. We too will go 12v refrigerator.

I forgot to mention I considered the Truma Combi but didn’t like the idea of having something happen and losing the water heater or heater function. The Truma A/C was almost 1k or more than the standard or the Houghton we are going with . Good luck with your choices .

I see I’m a little late on chiming in. However, we supplied Grant with a Houghton A/C when we built our rig and we love it. It’s quieter, already utilizes a soft start, and keeps us with the hottest of Florida weather. Enjoy!

Did you order your Houghton with soft start? I see on their website it’s an option.

Thats an interesting question. When I bought mine it was the only way it was available and one of the selling points. We have run it off out Honda 2000 without issues and now primarily run it off our Victron 3000 inverter if we are not on shore power.

I asked the dealer if they came with soft start and she said me but it could be added. I told her I saw they can be ordered with it from factory. I also was considering a 3000 watt inverter. How many or what size battery system do you have ? I’m on the fence about a battery/ solar setup.

We had Grant set the rig up with the battery connections relocated under the settee seat. We installed a Victron 3000 inverter/charger and three 400 ah 12v Lithium batteries and two 200 watt solar panels. We can run the fridge, heater, coffee maker, and lights indefinitely if there is any sun or about a week if we use the AC for an hour or two each day. The whole installation only took about three hours. The Bigfoot is a breeze to work on and the factory support is unmatched.

What batteries do you have ? The dealership I’m working with has quoted gopower inverter, not sure what batteries but a choice of 100 amp or 300 watt . Also three 200 watt panels . These would all be insatiable dealership . She told me they could do a better system than the system from Bigfoot for a cheaper price. It would kinda be a alacart system depending on what I want .

My main concern with the Truma is having it serviced, although now that it's being included as OEM in many brands, I'm certain repair shops will be becoming more available in greater masses.

FYI, there's a really nice metal shelf behind the propane tanks that's the perfect size for one of these larger 400/460 AH batteries. Funny I hardly ever hear anyone mention this space, and if not used for batteries, its a perfect place for gas or diesel storage.

Heading to Canada next week hopefully, and will be finalizing options!

Cheers

Goodluck on your build and safe travels to Canada. Truma is a premium upgrade in price , I’m not sure the a/c or combi are worth it in my mind . I do like the Truma tankless water heater. Our unit is supposed to be built in March so times ticking down .

I’m a big fan of Victron. I have been using them in the marine industry for years. For batteries we used Chins batteries. The installers won’t recommend them because there isn’t any markup but the internals are identical to name brand batteries at a fraction of the price.
