Airstream 16' FG launch

Looking at the two pictures makes me like my Snoozy even more. Airstream has the blacked out windshield as a unofficial trademark but I don’t see the utility. I can see why AS dumped the frameless design. That would be asking for trouble.

How so? Robert's original design provided more than enough structural strength to go without a conventional frame. It's likely they went with a frame not to avoid trouble, but due to production cost or manufacturing complexity in duplicating Robert's shell exactly. I'd be interested in his take on the subject.

Well I'd agree that the only similarity is the rear door. Otherwise, completely different designs that'll appeal to completely different people.

I really like the look of the Airstream, but seeing as I'll never buy one, I guess it doesn't really matter

Not to argue, I also see them similar, not same. I'll also grant that there are only so many ways to arrange a bed, bath, and kitchen.

Similarities:
The rear doors
Above average ceiling height.
Aerodynamic front ends, that 'break' the typical egg shape.
Wide center aisles
Counter along a side wall.
Large smoked glass windows
Side baths.

No let's argue!

I think it was just the implication that Airstream (or I guess Robert) basically copied the Lil Snoozy that set off the last few posts. Are the similar? Yes. About as similar as all fiberglass trailers are to each other, in that they're small, and tend to have a top and bottom section and belly band.

Beyond that, to my eyes the design is very different. The Snoozy is a wedge shape. The Airstream closer in shape almost to an Escape than a Scamp/Casita/Boler, but closer to the Boler shape than the Snoozy shape. Reminds me a bit of a bullet train..

You're right... a lot of people don't seem to realize that aerodynamics on the back end are just as important as the front.

It is true that the rear shape of the LIL Snoozy is to square for good aerodynamics. It looks like the Nest is about the same.

In order to make a trailer more aerodynamic, something's gotta give. It could be interior space, height, width or length, or maybe storage space. While the Snoozy has the most aerodynamic front, that means the severe slope in the bed area. The Nest is more aerodynamic in front than most trailers, but the rear entry does pose an aerodynamics issue. I would say it's not as severe as the completely flat back of the Snoozy however, since it has quite a bit more rounding just before the back area, and there is also a recess all the way around that helps create a spoiler effect.

Agreed... that little taper at the back end will make it the exit aerodynamics a lot better than a right-angle back edge.

The sloped area in the front of the Snoozy is completely usable, that's where the bed is. It is a little more square at the back but the corners and sides are rounded off to. The Snoozy is also 2 feet longer. I don't know what the cabin length is on the Nest but the Snoozy's cabin is 14'. I noticed the Nest has a raised section on the rear roof. I wonder if the is the "stand up" area. In the Snoozy the roof stays high until right at the queen bed.

As far the spoiler effect. That remain to be seen. I doubt if there is enough wrap around to make much of a difference.

Yes of course the bed is useable, but you do lose overhead space as well as alot of underbed storage. As I said, there are always tradeoffs.

True , but the Snoozy being two feet longer probably has more under bed storage. Like all of you I am eager to see what AS has done to the nest.

By the time you get that on the road, buying a few more options, paying sales tax. You are up to almost 50K. Will there be people willing to spend that much money to stay in something smaller then your bath at home. Who knows ? Carl

Just saw this thread and quickly scanned through posts. If it hasn't been clarified already, the bottom 3 images are not from Nest. Two different floor plans will be offered. These two units will most likely not be displayed at consumer shows before launching, because they were prototypes and there may be minor changes before the April launch. Robert and Airstream were still processing industry feedback at the RVIA show.
