Beds Running Lengthwise Rather Than Side to Side?

I couldn't think of the proper terminology but I was thinking through about beds that run front to back rather than crawl-over side to side. The manufacturers that I could think of that offered a floorplan with that option were: Bigfoot, the upcoming 21' Escape, the tiny Weiscraft Ponderosa, the Casita Liberty Deluxe. Am I forgetting any? I am not that familiar with the units that are no longer manufactured. I guess I could include the Lil' Snoozy, the twin bed model.

The Fiber Stream also came with front to back single beds that could be made up for a single full-width bed.

Compact Jr has an almost square bed that most sleep fore and aft.

FWIW: I think that front to back beds are called North/South and side to side are called East/West configuration. At least that's used in some motorhomes.

The molded fiberglass 1972-1979 Sunrader slide-in camper and it's companion 1978-79 17' motorhome had a California King bed that was north south, quite a trick.....

Yes, the Escape 5.0 is one. The Scamp isn't.

I'm thinking that manufacturers that want to appeal to the more "mature" individuals really need to look at this. We are past our climbing over anything unless an emergency stage in life.

Floyd: I love your fabric choice. I saw your mod with the dinette in your registry but am wondering when you convert to your king bed, what do you have under the far end?

The bridge for the wraparound couch remains in place as usual(see picture below).
The pedestal table stores below instead of making it into the bed base.
The original Scamp table is used for the extension by shortening the single leg and installing it in place of the pedestal tabletop when making the bed.

The surfside front kitchen can be set up as a king or queen and runs lenthways as a king

i have seen one mod online that had it set up as two singles

Bigfoot may have "North/South" beds in:

• 17' gaucho / rear bath
• 21' rear bed

...but they are still "crawl-over" double beds, located in the curb-side rear corner next to their rear bathrooms. Someone still has to sleep next to the wall. Only Bigfoot's 25' trailers have beds in which you don't have to do the crawl over dance.

Also, this past weekend, I saw Oliver had one side to side and one north south in the smaller 17' model. The newer 22' I'm unsure what is available, but the original 22' has north south.

Oliver's website is still kind of light, but they do have a floor plan of the new 22'. It is north/south...

Looking at your photos Floyd: Does the pedestal table only seat 2 or can you remove the board closest to the back wall? (It appears to be fastened to the ratfir fiberglass with a piano hinge, ahh it flips up?). So then do you add the entire original scamp table to the front end where storage shows in your photo which would stick out into the kitchen approximately 2 feet or so?

I think you kinda have it. The pedestal table and wraparound couch can seat at least 5 comfortably.
The flip-up was made because the seat is 24", the table is 20" the flip-up is 10" ...The regular bed is 54"....

The pedestal table is 20"X30" and can spin 360 degrees. that allows it to be 30" long when turned 90 degrees to the position in the picture.
Of course the original Scamp table is 44" long and so fills the 20" vacated by the pedestal table plus 24" or so into the kitchen.
The King bed is 78"X78" (minus the cabinet notches)
We found it very comfy . Having our feet more toward the center presents no problems.
The bed shown below is our factory sized deluxe bed (54" wide) so we seldom use this added luxury.

Floyd, thank you for all the detail. I don't think I would ever have thought about the possibilities. Also, it looks like if you really take care of your unit, yours is great, that you can't really tell if it is 2 years or 10 years old.

So you increase both dining space and bed space. Very clever. I'm still not clear how the foot section is supported at the bath room end. Raz

I almost bought a Scamp 13 deluxe, and was thinking of doing something similar with the table and wraparound dinette. Make it 29" wide (common boat sized bunk) and a narrow table. This way when alone the couch/dinette would be just wide enough to sleep on alone... drop the table and becomes a double.

The original Scamp table leg was still attached, I simply shortened it, so that the former table was supported level with the bed.
