Bill & Bob's MPG's Part-II A Question.
Certainly some will point out in the example shown on the CA state site Speeding and Your Vehicle's Mileage That Bill got there sooner, thus buying time itself for about $6 an hour, not a bad rate if you are short on time.
However, suppose that Bill and Bob tried this same contest again. This time Bill takes the freeway and Bob takes surface streets. But each route will still be exactly 60 miles.
Half way to the destination, while averaging 30 mph and much better MPG's, Bob realizes that he has an appoint to make at the destination and decides to switch over to the freeway.
The question is: What average speed will Bob have to drive for the rest of his trip to average the 60 mph that Bill averaged by taking the freeway.

Bob, they don't teach that stuff in schools anymore.........
A homeschooler may be able to still answer the question.
I'd say he had already driven his allotted time.
He will still be late no matter how fast he drives.

If we are talking any large metropolitan area in CA. then I take issue with the parameters that imply getting 30 mph average on a surface street OR 60 mph average on the freeway unless this is all taking place between midnight and 2 am.

The numbers are fine. Remember (even on this site) there are drivers that think that speed limits and safe driving practices are only suggestions.
But Carl caught it, the time has already been used up, short of being beamed there by Scotty, can't be done.

The answer to the question is : Depends on what Bob or Bill are towing…………….fifth wheel or travel trailer ……..

Doesn't matter, Bob is dead. An 18 wheeler that was speeding came around a curve at 55mph in 45mph speed zone. The 18 wheeler couldn't stop fast enough and ran over Bob and his family who were driving 15mph under the speed limit.. The 18 wheeler driver did get a ticket.

What state was the 18 wheeler from, maybe the speed limit is higher there?

Bob shouldn't have been using his cell phone calculator while driving and he may have been able to avoid the accident. Was the trailer OK and is it for sale?

This BOB didn't include a trailer in the question because he knows that the towing speed limit in CA is 55 MPH, making a 60 MPG average for Bill impossible in the first place.
BUT: If it was an average CA weekend vacation trailer it, no doubt would have been a 38' HunkaHauler sticky, with 3 slides and a rear door ramp for toy hauling, triple axles, being towed by a Ford F-950(?) that gets 3 mpg on diesel.....

I was a little bit off when I guessed Mach 2, but if Bob were able to travel at Mach 4 (4 times the speed of sound) it would take less than 30 seconds to complete the remaining 30 miles, so it would still round to 60 minutes total, and round to 60 MPH average :-)
Since Bob lives in California, he may have bought one of those exotic SR-71 Blackbirds from Beale AFB.

Hmmmm. There was an SR-71 parked about 6 miles down the street at the March AFB Museum, I'll have to ask for a test drive.....
