I've always used the truck sides of rest stops unless they permit overnights. Often the entrance signs direct you there before you can even assess the situation. But I've never overnighted at a developed rest stop unless it explicitly permits it. I might re-evaluate that though.

I have no problem with overnighting at truck stops. Have stayed at many. They are very convenient and a welcome friend during a long haul, at 8 PM and you're not going to find a real campground.

True, sometimes the spot you park at is in an empty corner but then at 1 am the big boys arrive and you get surrounded. You get serenaded by a half-dozen diesel engines, forever. They often run their engines all night. It happens. Them tall bright light posts provide security. They make you glad you have dark colored window shades. It could get tricky pulling out in the morning, sometimes. Best to plan ahead for that. But breakfast awaits inside, and bathrooms.

Here's one of my very favorite truck stops. Think that's in North Dakota.

Speaking of light poles that is also a great place to park as they are usually located in a parking space that is too small for a big rig. I have also parked behind big rigs filling up what is left of their parking space.

I haven't parked out on the truck side. All the truck stops I've been to are "travel center" style, with a car side, and typically will have a half dozen RV spots someplace off to the side where it's quiet. Got to sit out an ice storm for two days once, and had a manager direct me into a safe spot just ahead of an insane supercell storm in Nebraska another time. She tucked me between the main building and a service shop, and the wind still shook me awake when the storm hit.
