Some time ago I posted a question about Dexter's brake controller, and got not a single response here or on the several other forums on which I asked. I bought one because I figured Dexter ought to make a controller that works well w/ their other components.

Dexter sells a LOT of axles and brakes, but nary a single brake controller (other the one they sold me) it would seem.

I was hoping to delay until Jordan's new one came out*, but I am going ahead and installing the Dexter in both my TVs (Brake Controller slides into either TV). If I stay with an electronic unit, it will need the same wires to connect to anyway.

In the meantime, has ANYONE ever used one of these things?

OK, I know, everyone uses a Prodigy....

Bob

OK My 2 cents worth.

Jordan appears to be mechanical coupled brake controller. There's a cable going from the controller to the brake pedal. I would think that because it's a mechanical adjustment that it would be constantly requiring adjustment. Brake travel changes over time.

I tried to find some professional reviews, but alas there weren't any.

I took a look at it on the Dexter website. It sure doesn't say much about it there other than it's inertia controlled and for up to two axles. My guess is it's probably a rebadged Cequent product, but unless either Dexter or Cequent 'fesses up, you'll never know.

I think the $20 rebate on the Prodigy runs until August.
I got mine for $89 incl shipping with the rebate.
Awesome deal and seems to be an awesome controller.

I have used a Dexter DX-2 on my Cadillac DeVille and then transfered it to the Escalade. On the DeVille I had to add all the wiring - took all day. On the Escalade I just used the harness that came with the Escalade. The process was: 1) crimp 4 splices - harness to controller according to the instructions that came with the harness, 2) plug in DX-2, 3) mount DX-2 under dash using pre-drilled holes, 4) go on test drive to calibrate the controller, and 5) you done. Total time 40 minutes including hooking up the Casita and taking a test drive.

I wouldn't favour Dexter because they make the brakes. All electric brakes behave essentially the same, and the ability to punch out axles for a few decades doesn't indicate any electronic talents to me. I would rather go to a brake controller specialist (the Tekonsha division of Cequent, for example) than an axle specialist for this type of equipment.

Since trailer axles have not changed in any meaningful way for decades, axle companies may not be the best source for products which should take advantage of current technology.

I'm guessing Roger may be right about the real source of the Dexter controller, but if it's not really by Dexter it could also be from Valley, who like to sell their stuff under private label brands.

Information is good. Lack of information is not so good, but misinformation is much worse. Check facts, and apply common sense liberally.
