If you're going to Yellowstone try Highway 212, "The Yellowstone Trail." I grew up in Hector, Minnesota on the Yellowstone Trail, and would see families in the 50's and 60's heading west for vacation to either Yellowstone or the Black Hills. I told myself, "someday I'll be heading west too." Now over the years I've easily taken 212 at least 30 times or more, Bearstooth Pass probably 15 times (3 times on my recumbent bikes), and 8 times on the way to TOT in Kellogg, ID.

I also like highways twenty and thirty (The Lincoln Highway)to cross Iowa.

There are exceptions, but interstates are the safest way to get from point A to point B, and by far the fastest. Some are scenic, too, just not so up close and personal. Secondary roads are hit or miss. Some are amazingly scenic, some just trashy, and everything in between.

I can honestly say the worst day driving I've ever experienced was a high speed, two lane highway between Carson City and Las Vegas in Nevada. Unchanging desert scenery, limited fuel, sketchy restaurants, and crazy dangerous with heavy truck traffic, risky passing, turning traffic, and very little shoulder. There was some kind of big rodeo going on in a small town about halfway, and we were stuck in stop-and-go traffic for about 45 minutes just to get through it. I'm glad I wasn't towing that trip.
