Lightbulb Can't get into a state park

Good Morning,
My husband and I are heading to Texas on Monday in our 13 foot scamp. I gave up on southern Florida for this year. I would get up at midnight and click on any state park in the Keys and couldn't get a reservation. Does anyone have some recommendations for commercial campgrounds in the Keys? We are not retired military so that is out. We are not antisocial but when I see campground advertisements for the Keys, campers are dancing in a congo line or the trailers are crammed in like sardines. Or does anyone have any tricks they have learned to use to get reservations in state parks in the Keys?

I appreciate any help.
Laurie

I called the State of Florida Parks Dept and asked how to get a site at a State Park in the Keys . They told me I needed to book / reserve the site a year in advance . So if you want to reserve a site in the keys , you should be reserving it now for the winter of 2018

We are on our way back home to IL . We tried to book our same campground for next Xmas before we left but were told that snowbirds get first chance and that we could not book until September. We booked it earlier this year (spoke to the hubby manager at that time instead of the wife this time).

The campground was tight, but I am returning with just a couple of noseeum bites. It was away from the water, so not so many. Plus the new camper made it comfy to stay inside when the bugs were out.

If noseeums don't bother you (They never bit my husband.), the KOA we stayed at before was nice and seemed to be fairly easy to get reservations. It is the Naples-Marco Island KOA. I cannot speak for the Keys.

I did try to book a site for 2017. I even got up at midnight to push the reserve button for Long Key State Park. I still was not able to get a reservation. I must have a very slow computer. I also noticed that Long Key State Park will be closed starting October 17 for a year.

My experience over the years(many of them) is that private campgrounds and rv parks usually have sites available. Since 1962 have never been left high and dry without a spot. We have spent a few nights in Walmart parking lots, truck stops, casino parking lots, and once in a church parking lot on the advice of a local police officer. Over all those years the above four examples probably total less than a dozen nights.
