Honda Generator 1000EU

I am looking at getting a Honda generator.... just incase I need to go out to the trailer or electrical outages or ?? what ever may occur..

I am debating to get either the 1000EU or 2000i but really dont know what my needs will be..
My friggie is a 110V only and i believe the wattage is 600.... I do have a microwave with is also 600W.. so I am assuming that the 1000UE wouldnt carry enough to run both IF I had to use the microwave plus a light or two????. I have the propane stove and heat.
I would like to try to boondock one of these days and need to know which would be the better investment..

I have the EU2000. IMHO, I would definitely get the 2000 over the 1000. Here is a useful home chart that give you a better idea of what your needs may be. I got this off a website from a distributor that sells generators (Honda). Didn't really cut and paste well, but I think you can make out what it is saying.

Don't even ask you a question, buy the 2000. I made some kind of an error an error many years ago when I bought a 1000 watts.

As a matter of fact I had to recently get a new 2000 watts. A 1000 is not enough to START a fridge, a microwave and even start a 5,000 BTU A/C.

2000 watts is exactly what you will need for a small FGRV. 879$ at wisesales.com

P.S. I keep my more than 20 years old 1000 EX... simply because I don't wan't to get peanuts if I sell it... Those Honda generators are simply "undestructible"... good for life.

Hmmmmmmmm, Norman I looked up wisesales.com for the Honda EU2000 because I was surprised at the $893.00 cost. That would be an great price for the EU2000. I didn't see it for sale on their site. Christi, if he's right, that is a great price. Keeping in mind, I bought mine 2 years ago for $1000 and maybe they have come down.

Sharon.. wow you did get a good buy for the 2000. The local place here sells them for $950 .....I am more thinking about ususing it for the trailer in case I had to park in it for emergency reasons.. but with the microwave.. friggie and if ever the a/c the 2000 would be much better...

At least if I had to use it in the house.. to keep friggie going or a small heater and one light.. that would cover it i am sure.... so the 2000 is what i will get...

thank goodness I have never been caught up in a diaster of any sorts.. our electricty hardly ever goes out but they always say 'be prepared'....

I remember that site (although I can't remember the name of it) somewhere in the mid-west. I was going to get mine through them, but I had other home issues (sump pump flooding) that required me to get it a.s.a.p. I got mine from a local store and paid $1000 bones.

You really need to take into consideration just how much you will use a generator. If I were to use one for household emergency backup or for major recreation use I would certainly want the best. If I were going to use the recreation unit only occasionally, well I may choose a less expensive model.

For my home I have a 8500W electric start for emergency back-up. I did not skimp on that unit and for camping and occasional use I have a McCullough 2000W Inverter unit that cost me around $500 and I got it from www.toolking.com. Note: The camping model is far quieter than the contractor/home emergency generator and it is within the National Park Service noise requirement.

I once had a Yamaha 1000W that was quiet, fuel efficient and it ran the air conditioner in our Scamp 5r however it was almost impossible to obtain parts for.

BJ’s Wholesale club sells a 3,500W generator for $199USD and It will power everything in the camper, all at the same time. (It is loud and more than likely louder than the National Park Service would allow)

Can someone comment some more on the 2000.

I have a 5,000 BTU window air unit and fridge.. will it power these okay... perhaps even a small tv?

How about in econo mode? I heard somewhere that it had difficulty supporting the start up of an ac unit when running econo mode.

According to posts made here in the past, that Honda 2000 will work fine. However, always keep in mind that a 5000 BTU A/C will operate typically at around 700 watts just running the fan, but will surge up to 1500 watts or more when the compressor kicks in. It's still well within that 2000 watt operating range, but just be frugal when running the A/C and anything else.

The new inverter style generators like the Honda work well with consumer electronics like computers, TV, and such. A better choice than cheaper non-inverting gensets. But if you run your electronics with a voltage conditioner device like a UPS or other conditioners that are available, you can use a cheaper, non-inverter type generator safely. A UPS, (uninterrupeable power supply) isolates your electronics from the line voltage by actually running your gear from a battery & inverter curcuit. Voltage spikes, brown-outs, and dirty AC has no effect since it's not felt on the curcuit your gear is on.

Thats not the case with a "Surge Protector" type device that only protects by popping a breaker if there's a voltage or current surge, and they offer no protection for a "under-volt" condition, like when a generator loads down or drops off.

If you can afford them, Hondas & Yamaha are the way to go, but with a additional purchase of a good UPS or a dedicated Voltage Conditioner, a standard generator will do the job just as well.

Thanks for the feedback. I'd probably go with a cheaper, non-inverter type... but for me it's all about the size/weight. Running with the Honda Element, I'm making every effort to keep my load down to a minimum.
