How far is too far ....

... to pick up a used travel trailer? I really don't expect an answer but this is the question I'm asking myself in consideration of a Bigfoot purchase that's almost twice the distance away as my previous Bigfoot purchase. My first bout with insanity in driving almost 1200 miles had an excuse. It was my first RV. But now with almost a year of RV experience under my belt I should know better. My guess would be to ask myself.. how bad do i want to purchase the trailer to go that far to get it? Is it in good shape... is it worth the trip? If I had the money and the time.. go for it? Other wise just sit till another one becomes available thats closer to you..

We live in Kentucky and first looked at our'05 Casita in Colorado. (Drove there)

We later made another trip from Kentucky to the center of Kansas to get our trailer.

I don't know how far is too far, when it's something that you want.

I went from the Richmond, VA, area to Winnipeg to pick up my Boler. Yeah, it was crazy far (3,400 miles round-trip), but there were reasons (nice weather, I would get to drive through my home state of MN, there were 3 trailers to look at on the same trip).

That said, in the end it really came down to -- I wanted to get a trailer and... I just wanted to to go So I didn't feel the need to completely justify it (even though I did do some calculations so I would know the facts).

We have discussed it and are willing to drive approx. 1200 miles. Two days. We hope to find our dream trailer "that close".

Edited to add...2400 miles round trip, hopefully we can sight see on the way home.

I was on my way to Omaha NE for that 2008 16 Scamp the dealer had if I'd had time to make the deal. Someone beat me to it, we're talking two hours after it was posted..... Trip each way 1100 miles according to Google Maps.

So guess it is personally evaluating the "deal," the distance, the time, and whether you work or not and can take the time. Oh, and of course whether you can afford the cost of the trip on top of the cost of the trailer.

Someone should be on their way right now to get that 2003 13 Scamp in Iowa for $3000 that broke this morning, if not they probably missed that one too.

I drove from STL to Tuscon to get the Fiberstream.
On the way there it seemed too far but once I got there and was in it the first night,all was well again.

I also went to San Antonio to get a Casita that turned out to be a pile of junk that was not as described and I turned around "Empty Hitched" and drove back.

That was Too Far!

You can not do too much homework with these.
I did and I was still lied to.

That's a tough decision. But as mentioned life is too short to live with regrets. For alot, it's not the distance it's the time factor. I couldn't imagine charging back and forth like a crazy person... okay maybe to GET the trailer, but then would want to enjoy the trip home... a relaxing camping trip. As my father used to say every time we got lost on a road trip. Sit back and enjoy the view, you may never pass this way again. So, I'd make the trip serve double-duty and enjoy the view on the way home.

Hi: All...I got lucky& drove 120 mi. round trip to get a '77 Boler 13'er...my brother drove 3000 mi. to get a '72!!! I drove 150mi. to get a '07 Escape 5.0. Who knows what lengths we'll go to... to get the next one???

I drove 4000 miles each way from Anchorage, Alaska to Rice, Texas to pick up a new Casita five years ago. My first used trailer I bought on the same street I was living on. My latest used trailer was 1100 miles from home. So I don't really have a limit, I guess. Those 21 RB's seem to be really scarce right now, so get one if you can wherever it might be.

I know the question was related to **used** - but I will chime in anyway...

We drove all the way from Sacramento to Backus to adopt our 5er. THEN we continued east to Niagara, VT, NH, ME, MA, and so on - to see the Fall Colors. We took a month off - which is hard to do... unless you are within a year of retiring ANYWAY - then what can they DO to you??? Make me leave early???? And on the way home visited some church friends who moved to Pueblo, Colorado. By-the-way... after seeing OUR lil Scamp, they went to TX and got their new unit - "Cassie".

So, for US we put on around 8,500 miiles,

It is a Travel Trailer, if you can be certain it is in the condition you want at the price you like and is the model/type of trailer you are looking for, especially if this type of trailer is hard to find in your area, why not travel to pick it up? Make a vacation out of it or a holiday as they say in Canada & Britian.

Back in 2000 when I was looking I couldn't find a used Fiberglass trailer. I ordered my Scamp and had it delivered.

I only drove about 100 feet up the driveway to the street to get mine and back of course.
