How far the next Wal-Mart

The 450 mile section of US 36 between Marysville, KS and Aurora, CO may be the longest between Wal-Marts in the US. Anyone know of a longer one?

How far to the next Wal-Mart?

Chester,

Nothing in my post excludes Canada. I thought it was a foregone conclusion that the Alaska Highway would take top honors now that a Wal-Mart has opened at Whitehorse. You may have noticed that I said "between Wal-Marts". the Alaska Highway has only one Wal-Mart that I know of at mile 887/1476km. I don't remember seeing that one in August of 2002 but I do remember a post by Charles Watts on that subject. http://www.fiberglassrv.com/board/read.php?TID=845
In the lower forty-eight, the 683 miles of US 50 between Grand Junction, Colorado and Fallon, Nevada would be a top contender.

How far the next Wal-Mart?

Chester,

It looks like we are the only ones up at this hour.

Wal-Mart is planning a new web site just for Canada, but for now, it is hard to find the Canadian locations on the Internet. I am not a big Wal-Mart fan and would go out of my way to shop at the North Mart stores. The one at Inuvik was great. I love traveling the "Blue Highways" and that may be the reason that I like places that have been overlooked by Wal-Mart.

Hi Craig
I know where you are coming from.We don't have a Wallmart where I live.Its 1 hr away.

For us when going to city it is a bit of a treat.

It seems that the Big Box stores are taking over. The mom and pop operations are gone.

As for traveling I can get lost in my area pretty fast and really enjoy nature. This year is bad due to fires.

One day I hope to do the complete North Trip.Alaska/Yukon/Northwest Territories.

How far the next Wal-Mart/

You must be talking about Cranbrook. I have always had a fascination for railroad towns and was sorry that I didn't have time last September. I got into Cranbrook late in the day after the long drive from Grande Prairie and had to be on my way early the next day. The Canadian Museum of Rail Travel and Fort Steele Heritage Town are definitely on my list of places to visit soon. It may surprise you to know that Banff and Jasper are not on my list. If I wanted to see glaciers, I would go back to Alaska. I will be heading north again next month and then east or west until I run out of road. The fires may have some bearing on my decision this year. Do you know of any major fires burning along Highway 3 between Cranbrook and Hope?

There are no major fires between Hope and Cranbrook - YET!

Much of southwestern Canada (BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan) is under a very high or extreme fire alert status. The city of Kelowna is in grave danger as we speak. The fire near here is currently about 150 square kilometers (90 square miles). They are bringing in firefighters from the east coast of Canada and also the military is now involved to help battle this situation.

BC alone currently has about 850 fires raging at this time.
