Pretty nice! Sure beats the AFB where I was. OTOH, I might have enjoyed the golf course more. The kid next door to us is going into the Navy in a couple months. I'll have to show the article to his Dad.

That's a pretty far cry from the open-bay barracks we knew and loved on Worm Island at NTC San Diego, isn't it?

That's not how I remember living. It was more "Open Concept" style, and a closenit co-hesive grouping.

Wow and good for them, I think it's a great idea... you want the best, you have to have reasons to attract the best My father was career Army. Our family lived in the family housing in Fort Rucker, AL back in the late 50s early 60s.... WE didn't have it so nice. But that was a different era and expected back then.

The Army went to 2 person rooms with bath back in the early 80s at Fort Gordon, GA and many other places.

I was stationed at Ft. Rucker back in 1960 and opened up one of the old WWII Wooden open bay barracks to live in. This was at the beginning of the Army build-up of the soon to be Air Cav. Those wooden barracks had a fire time if less than 5 minutes if they ever cought on fire so we had fire guards on guard every night. Do you remember the base hospital with miles of coordors and you had to follow a color line on the floor to get from one place to another?

I also was stationed at Ft Rucker, went there in Oct of 1958 and was out of there and out by January of 59, slept head to toe in the 2 story barracks with I think 30 on the bottom floor and 30 on top, had to take our showers in one big community shower. The class that graduated the day before mine all went to Indo China (Vietnam) and mine ended up going to Germany. Ft Rucker was in the process then of building new barracks but I never got to see them. Our barracks in Germany were old Nazi Barracks and of different size rooms to house various numbers of men like from 2-6. Because we were a small section and attached to an artillery outfit I got a room for 2on the end of the building which was nice. great duty.

I had a bunk second from the top of four plus a three foot high locker, 16 sailors to a room. This was on a slow moving, heavy rolling LST. The Navy had not yet learned of air conditioning. Norfolk VA is one sticky place in summer. Oh, and we had to take an engine apart and fix it at sea when returning from Pearl Harbor. But we were young and tough.
