Know how to change a tire.....

Yes yes I'm sure you have AAA or some roadside assistance but cell service is not always available. Was recounting a story about my flat tire to a friend and told her in the very least carry the right tools so someone can assist if need be. She called me last week and said thank you because she did have a flat and thankfully on my advice had everything she needed.... just my friendly reminder

Everyone who has a driver's licence should know how to change a tire, it's not rocket science. In addition, they should be aware of the location and use of the tools required in their vehicle. If you have never changed a tire then man up ( or woman up ) and get out there and practice once in your driveway.

Come to think of it, I think a demonstration of a tire change should be a part of the driving test.

Reminds me of a true story. I helped drive a rental truck from NM to WA state with a friend some years ago. His daughter had moved out there as an WA-DOT Hwy engineer, we were taking some of her household stuff to her. She was out riding in a Suburban full of fellow engineers (all males) up by Mt. St. Helens area and it had a flat tire. They were going to call into the office to have someone come and change the tire. She wanting to get back home as soon as possible said no, she would change it and she did. Made me smile, as it does now. I had made it a point in showing my daughter how to change a tire and seems he had done the some thing.

By the way, she was and is a thin woman.

Before my dad would let me drive any of the family vehicles, I had to demonstrate that I knew how to check and fill oil, check tire pressure, etc., and jack up the car and change a tire.
On my long drive on small roads to a job interview in the early 70's, I had a flat, and changing it made me late by a few minutes, though I had started out quite early.
I had to excuse myself from shaking hands upon arrival, because my hands were black from the tire change. However, after a few minutes of scrubbing in the ladies' room and an hour long interview, I got the job, even though I was delayed by the flat.
Yes, it makes sense for everyone to know how to change a tire. Good advice, Brandy.

My Dad had a rule for both my brother and I.

"If you can't fix it, you can't drive it.
If you can't cook it, you can't eat it"

Now, my brother is a lousy cook, and I am a lousy mechanic, but we both eat and won't generally get stranded by something simple like a tire.

Years ago, I stopped to help an elderly lady standing beside her car on the side of the highway. I had my younger brother with me, & we thought between us it would be a simple / quick job. It was 20 min later as I was removing the jack & putting the flat back in the trunk, I slammed down the trunk lid, the lady said she hoped that I had not disturbed her sleeping son. My brother who was 12 - 13 years old quiped that he should have changed the tire .... the lady looked alarmed & said Oh my no ... he might have hurt himself & got dirty. We just giggled ... got back in my Jeep and left.
I guess you meet all kinds... What a hoot
