Lake Superior in Winter

We usually visit Lake Superior in Spring and Autumn, but many folks go in Winter, with skies, snowshoes and snow machines.

Here is a video of Lake Superior Ice stacking.

The same thing happens on Highway 169 along the shore of
Lake Mille Lacs in Minnesota . The ice comes up and over the
highway and they have to take heavy equipment to open / clear the road .

Some years if the wind is from the right direction ice builds up on the shore in front our cabin. The ice will build up to a height of 6+ ft and it makes a tinkling sound that has a musical element to it .
Spring is aways off so about 2 more months to ice out .
Early spring is a beautiful season but then it gets hot and all you can do is pray for an early fall.

Superior in Winter ?

The 'real' Superior is on the 'other side'. We lived on the NE side for 34 years, including occasional winter no-water camping (snow-shoeing, ice-fishing, etc.) but, using a PU truck-slide-in camper with Propane furnace. Best years of our lives !! But, now retired; and, 1000 km further south (still in Ontario).

Each side has its own character, all are worth exploring.

Ice in Mille Lacs

Video of this ice stack on Lake Mille Lacs in 2013. It broke through glass doors of homes.

No video, but the ice builds up differently on Lake Ontario. This is a couple of years old, but it still happens during a bad winter:
