Looking for boondocking sites around Sisters, Oregon

My partner and I will be heading to Sisters, Oregon, for the big quilt show on July 13th. We are hoping to find a nice place to boondock with our 13' Scamp within 10 miles or so of Sisters. We'll be arriving on Thursday, so I'm sure all of the official campsites will already be taken. But that's okay, as we prefer to boondock anyway. Any specific suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Look for US Forest Camp grounds or BLM land.

Sisters is right in the middle of the Deschutes National Forest, which has a number of developed campgrounds but also allows for dispersed camping in most other parts.

It's been a long time since I camped around there, so wouldn't like to give any suggestions that may prove no longer current. I suggest you take a look at the Forest Service's vehicle use maps for the area around Sisters. Dispersed camping is allowed along most open roads. link to page

As always, though:
A stop at the Ranger station before heading up into the woods is a good idea- conditions/restrictions can change from day to day.

Have fun!

Francesca

Drive out hwy 242 from Sisters. There's a lots of places that one can boondock off the road. There one FS campground "Cold Springs" that's first come first serve. Just past that there's a road to the right with at least one nice spot to camp.

Sisters has changed quite a bit since our first visit a few years ago to the one we made in 2012. Still enjoyed it a lot, but it sure has spread.

Mark:

We have been to the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show many times, and have stayed at Suttle Lake South, just north of Sisters, and Tumalo State Park, just south of Sisters. We are going to the quilt show next week and will be staying at Tumalo in site #65 Wednesday to Sunday if you want to visit us.

You could try this link for Suttle Lake:
Campground Details - SOUTH SHORE, OR - ReserveAmerica - [NRSO]

None of the sites in Suttle Lake have hookups, but the lake is nice, and it is close to Sisters.

Suttle Lake is a not real close to Sisters. There's several other places that are closer. Tumalo State Park is one, if you like Oregon State Parks, I don't. The Metolius River area has several FS campgrounds and is closer to Sisters than Suttle Lake.

If it was me I'd call Sisters Parks and find out about the Sisters City Park which has camping. Then check Cold Springs since it's the closest. There's several dispersed sites in the Cold Springs area, one walking distance to the springs. (The one Cold Springs is named after. Tumolo SP is probably your most expensive option.

I just about forgot about another one. This one I haven't stayed at along with the city park. The others I've camped at. Indian Ford a few miles north on highway 20. The Forest Service lists this one as 5.6 miles from Sisters and indicates that there's almost always a vacant spot. Here's the FS listing.

That's over twice as far as the places I've suggested.

Byron:

In our experience the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show is a major event with camping spots really quite scarce. We made our booking many months ago and even then there were few spots available. I hope that you are right that there are spots available closer to Sisters!

Wow-

That quilt show is starting to sound like a must-see major event.

I had no idea...hoping for trip reports!

Yup, Along with several other events. The problem is you're relying on reservations along with the hordes. I'm relying on first come first serve places I've been to many time over the past 30 plus years. I can't think of a time when I couldn't find a place in Forest Service first come first serve campgrounds. Although I suppose it's possible. In that case I'd head out along 242 and side road or two and find a dispersed camping spot.

Thanks for the information. I went ahead and made a reservation at Suttle Lake for Thursday, which was the only day available. Since we probably won't make it down there until early evening on Thursday, that will give us a guaranteed spot that night and then we'll try to find a free boondocking site for the rest of the visit.
