Your photos of your tipi must have been pre-hack.

Would you re-post?

Thanks.

Morgan, as you know we love camping in many ways. Here is our 21’ lodge along the Owens river on BLM land Thanksgiving weekend many years ago.

We were all set up with an oak fire in the center and buffalo hides on the floor for warmth. This may be the most luxurious way to camp.

That's cool.
I have seen them as rentals at KOA . They had carpet a wood base and bunks. Looked very comfortable.

KOA in not much like the real thing. No oak fires and no cook area. A true ‘lodge’ also has an “altar” area. This is an area where the rope from the top knot that ties it all together is tied to ‘mother earth’. It is also where the soil from the fire pit is placed to make a mound. On top of the mound is a item for all that enter the lodge to ponder.

Much wisdom went into this tradition. Children could not play around the altar. (there was a fire, and of course the the tie down rope that made the lodge withstand the Chinook winds from the North.)

We learned many of the ways of the Sioux and greatly enjoyed the experience. Lori cried when we sold our lodge.

I don’t think I do. Maybe I can find some. I think I still have some on 35mm ‘slides’.

A 21’ ‘lodge’ is huge. My living room at home is not that big.

This lodge was 21’ across in diameter on the ground and 21’ tall. (talk about cathedral ceilings) The poles were 30’ lodge pole pines from Oregon (hand peeled).

We had 17 Boy Scouts and 4 adults camped inside once on a snow trip to the Redwoods in the High Sierras at Grants Grove in the snow. There was 4 feet of snow on the ground and we were warm and toasty inside.

Hi: When asked about all the different Faiths in the world an Indian Elder said "Look at the Tipi... All the poles start from different places on the ground and go to the same place in the sky" Alf S. North shore of Lake Erie

Kevin and I spent a week on Pine Ridge Reservation last summer, building beds for the Lakota. It was our first trip for the Burro too, although we did not camp in it while we were volunteering. We used it to transport donations for the Lakota, filling it with blankets, sheets, and personal items that the Lakota could use. The following week, we went to Yellowstone.
While we were at Pine Ridge, working with a group called Re-Member, a non-profit group, we helped build a tipi. I felt so important; I was assigned to tear up cloth for the flags at the top. That is until the Lakota guide who was helping us, announced to everyone that the flags at the top had not meaning, just decoration.
The first picture is taken while driving through Rosebud Reservation. We stopped to take pictures. It is so beautiful there, not spoiled much. The other pix are building the tipi.

We plan to return in March.

CindyL

PS: I am afraid I did not volunteer to sleep inside though. I prefer my Burro.

Here are some photos I found. These are not my tipi, but similar.

Note there is an inner lining that goes up about 6 feet to direct the smoke up and out of the tipi.

We sold ours. When you get yours I’ll come over and show you how to set it up. We got it down to 1.5 hours with three people.
