Excellent Darrel! <img src=http://members.shaw.ca/JoeyTomato/clap.gif/>

It's amazing how closely the Compact II's lines match your Bronco.
I really need to get my Boler's altitute up too, to match the Jeep.
The 15" Wheels sure do help don't they ;)

Here's a little "photoshop" present for you...

BTW, is your CompactII on a torsion axle/suspension?

Mike

Hi Mike
Thank you for the picture update. Yes I have been excited about the classic lines on both rigs since I found the Compact II. I considered a torsion axle install and I may do It yet. The axle I'm using is a straight axle spring combo. The torsion axle would give me much more clearance. I even found one that could be modified. Actually I am engineering the axle so that it will be movable from low for on highway and raised for off highway. I am trying to factor in the Camber needed to swivel the axle tube or the spindle lever to maintain the camber. I wanted to get it on the road so I could start using it until the new axle is finished.
Thanks again and good luck on your Joey Tomatoe.

Great Minds think alike!

I too have considered setting up a dual height system. I know some older VWBug owners used to re-index the torsion axles when they got turned into dune buggies. The axle was an oval shape that allowed a different ride height depending how you turned it.

I have'nt had my tires off to get a good look at the Boler setup, but I think it's similar to this:

If I could remove the torsion arm from the axle and rotate it 90º and remount it, it looks like it would work. If it could be re-indexed without re-welding things, it could make switching the height back and forth possible.(The torsion arm would need to be secured with some kind of fastener instead of welding) It should work, provided it doesnt effect the alignment and tire wear too much at different ride heights, as you mentioned.Of course this is just theory at this point. Failing that I may have to go to lift blocks like Hans did here:

The torsion axle set up is great. We use them in our construction trailers. They are great for off road clearance and are quite durable.
I have special ordered several trailers with a 45 degree down angle which really gives a lot of lift. The one bad thing about them is you can't repair them. We have broken several and just have to order a new axle. The axle spring set up will allow you to repair or replace componants.

I have also considered reindexing the torque arm to maintain the camber on the tube but that is quite a task requiring cutting and rewelding. I even looked at putting the mounting brackets on a swivel set up to move the arms up and down. This would work but it would realign the axle camber with each adjustment. This may be allright for offroading where slower speeds and dirt roads will allow for the difference but it would be a disaster for towing on the highway. What I am working on is an arrangement which maintains the axle tube castor angle but also allows the torsion arms to swivel up or down as needed to change the lift quickly.

I am modifying my torque axle to test this. I will keep you posted on my progress.
