New Iberia, LA

Our little Scamp is still under snow...and will be for some time...so we're going to take the City of New Orleans down to (wait for it...) New Orleans at the beginning of April while The Beloved Dot has time off from school. We're looking at taking a day or so away from New Orleans and want to head out into the bayous. I'm thinking about New Iberia or Lafayette. The Tabasco factory on Avery Island is a must... but do any of the Local Denizens have any suggestions?

Swamp Tours

I live in Lafayette which is not far from New Iberia. You could always go to Henderson Lake at MaGee's Landing. From there you will be able to take guided swamp tours. I always see a lot of out of town folks riding around in the tour boats when I am fishing. The weather is pretty nice right now with lows in the 40's and highs in the mid 70's. Have fun and be sure to enjoy the food.

If you're in New Iberia try Duffy's Diner. We like the fried shrimp. They come with a Pistole.

Avery Island is also worth the side trip as is the rice mill in New Iberia.

Beware. The only LA State Park we were unhappy with was Lake Fausse Point not far from New Iberia. The camping spots were very nice, the mosquitoes were not. Since we have no shower in our unit we make use of park facilities. Lake Fausse was the only park with facilities we did not want to use. Toilets and sink bowls were ok, but walls, counters, floors were disgusting.

I was most interested in learning about the culture, not Tabasco culture. The Acadian places I most wanted to visit were not open on the days we drove through. We did find a small two for one museum in St. Martinville. The admission into one museum got us into the museum next door. Both were interesting. At that museum we were advised to drive on Hwy 182 (the route the Union troops marched). Many lovely historical homes on that road. There are 400 in Franklin.

We really enjoyed our outing to Barataria nature Preserve just outside of New Orleans.

We stayed a couple of nights at the KOA West NO. Our stay was mid week, cost was $40 per night. They have a limited number of seats in their passenger van that takes one to and from the French Quarter. We were lucky to get seats. the driver gives really good information. Once in the French Quarter one can take streetcars different directions. Not having to drive and find parking in New Orleans was wonderful. Within walking (we drove) distance of the KOA is Dot's Diner, very good.

Our food search led us to several different versions of Boudin, tried it every place we found it on the menu. If you get over to Lake Charles we especially liked Billedeaux's Cajun Kitchen. glad we had the GPS to find an authentic Cajun place. Really the only place we ran into a different accent, that was a surprise.
Stayed at Sam Houston Jones park there.

Our last park in LA was Fontainbleau near Mandeville north side of Lake Pontchartrain. there we met camp hosts from The Range. They suggested several places to overnight on the return home.

We headed up I-55 (beautiful surface and scenery through Mississippi) and overnighted at the Lady Luck Casino in Caruthersville. MO. We *do not* do casinos. This turned out to be a fantastic overnight stop. The RV area was wonderful. Restrooms, shower, laundry area spotless. A very nice evening meal next to a lovely fireplace in the casino.

The other overnight places the camp host recommended are listed on a map I have elsewhere. Let me know if you want those locations. They seem to drive the same route we took and knew nice spots.

forgot to mention. the LA state Park website reservation system made it sound like we would have fantastic rates using Golden Age. Did not happen, they have reciprocity with just a couple of states, not MN.

They also charge a reservation fee to people who come without reservations.

Our State Park fees were a very reasonable $20-24 per night.

We're staying in a cabin at Lake Fausse Point. Over the water. WITH screens, I assume!

We ate at cafe des Amis too. Could see our table in the video. We had live music too, but missed the Zydeco. No dancing on the day we were there.

Very nice meal. Interesting town.
