Raspy posted the quiz.
Rapsy said the correct answer is 89.
Raspy said that more than once.
I'm going to trust Raspy.

Not if you know algebra and the order of operations. You're way off.

Because its his game.. he makes the rules AND he is the umpire. Besides.. I don't see any good explanations of how to come to any other answer. An explanation like the one that I posted showing how to get the result 89. If someone wants to debate the answer they need to post clear evidence.

Back in post #11, I was wrong (at 149) using the proper order of operations, but only because I didn't notice the missing tire shadows on the trailer in the final line.
When I got the hint from Raspy, and noticed that there were missing tires on the trailer in the bottom line, I did the math again using the correct order of operations and came out with the same answer as Raspy, so I'll go with his answer of 89.

This quiz is fun, not only because it requires one to look close, but also because it shows how people deal with this stuff in other ways. Whether or not to believe the correct answer based on who posted it, whether or not to read through the clues while trying to solve it, how to use the correct order of operation. It's a fun little path of discovery that shows how we can miss important information. I had a hard time solving it in the beginning too. I especially like how people keep posting the wrong answer after the right answer has been posted, after clues to the right method and clear steps to get there have been posted.

Kinda the same thing that occurs with important health and social questions. Perhaps the greatest lesson from this thread is easy to miss, just like the back set of tires.

People get different answers because the question itself is deliberately ambiguous or confusing via unclear notation, just like all of those math questions that go up on social media. The purpose of the "quiz" isn't to test math or logic abilities. It's to get people to respond. The more people who respond and argue about it, the more the post surfaces on social media (or gets bumped to the top on forums).

But math isn't ambiguous, IF the reader slows down and reads... and looks at each piece. That's what makes these tests interesting to me. Who actually takes the time to look and read and who just wants to respond. In the end, it's not whether the answer was wrong, it's if the responder learned why their answer was wrong. Learned something!

The math itself isn't ambiguous in this case, but the notation's deliberately misleading. It's not as bad as the usual ones that rely on implied multiplication via parentheses having ambiguous/undefined priority vs explicit multiplication and division, but it's still simple math with weird obfuscation on top for the sake of creating "engagement" on social media posts.

Isn't that the main reason for social media? To engage people? It's supposed to be two-way communication, not just push communication. I get plenty of that on static websites.
You notice this was posted in the General Chat forum. No one must reply. "Similar to "Cheers" format, don't take anything too seriously. Come hang out, meet your friends but please remember that discussions about politics and religion are not allowed at FGRV."

Elliot,
It's just a simple quiz to share for fun. No ulterior motive.

Well, Oliver has sure got exposure from it.
I see a lot of these on Facebook - "what was your first car"?
I click on the three dots at the source and set FB to delete the question and all responses. I didn't do that in this case because it doesn't appear to be a phishing expedition like many on FB.

I would not say that ambiguous is the best word. But there are some assumptions you must make.
There is one assumption that, if changed, results in the correct answer being 209.
So the new puzzle is to tell me what different assumption makes the correct answer 209.
I realize this is a bit vague so I will post a clue in the morning if it is needed.
Actually, I did include a vague clue in this post...

Given that this trailer has no numeral factor assigned, there is no answer. Or the question is 5 plus nothing times 6 is 30.
