Hwy 12 re-opened late yesterday (11/20) as far south as Hatteras. Ocracoke is still closed. Our DOT folks do an awesome job.

I have to wonder how much longer the state of North Carolina will keep spending the millions they do on route 12. Currently they are building a bypass around the southern end of Pea Island that always floods and it's my understanding the road just south of the new bridge on the north end of Pea Island was recently flooded. And then there's Ocracoke, still not open from damage caused by Dorian.

Enjoy it while we can. With ocean levels rising it's only a matter of time before it's gone.

Some of you may have read or heard the news of three cows being swept from their home on Cedar Island to Portsmouth Island (a part of Cape Lookout National Seashore) by Hurricane Dorian. This meant an open water crossing of at least three miles.

If you click on the link, be sure to expand the pictures to see the damage suffered from recent storms but also the beauty of this treasure. The Seashore consists of three main islands, none with any permanent human inhabitants, no development, no roads and very limited amenities. Access is only by boat or private ferry (4WD strongly recommended). The Park Service does offer a small number of cabins on Portsmouth and South Core. If you've visited Cape Hatteras NS, enjoyed it and thought it to be remote, put Cape Lookout on your bucket list.

We stayed in one of the NPS cabins on Cape Lookout a few years ago, not one of the few that are wired for electricity. The cabins are located on the ocean side, with only a dune between you and the Atlantic. There's propane provided for cooking and hot water, and each cabin has a shower, flush toilet, a screened-in porch, and bunk beds with comfortable mattresses. We left the windows open at night and had no problems sleeping, even though it was late August. The ranger station sells ice and gasoline, the latter for 4wd vehicles and a generator, if you bring your own. We kept our food cold in an ice chest. Wonderful experience, would do it again. Bring bug spray for dusk and dawn walks.

And with all these PROBLEMS people still keep coming back for more! Ya the beach is pretty and fun however at what cost to the citizens of all these oceanfront states to continually rebuild a losing battle at the expense of their none oceanfront fellow state citizens?

vintageracer, the government knows the solution to this. It did it for farmers and small towns in the Mississippi flood plains a few years ago. They paid to move people and farms. If you didn't move, you no longer got Flood insurance. The reason the government doesn't do that for the outer banks is because unlike most of the people in the Mississippi flood plain most people who still own homes in the outer banks are very well off. Have you seen some of these Taj Mahals they have built? Money talks....
