Pop-up Toaster?

Has anyone found a low-wattage pop-up toaster I could use with our inverter?

I'm tired of toasting bread in a frying pan.

Here's one, whose design and concept has been around for many years, and it doesn't require any electricity to use.

I’ve used one of the wire toasters, I have a couple, for 60 years. Eventually they get rusty or the wires get bent or weak from the heat off the burner. Flipping the toast around for even browning without burning your fingers on the wires will teach you to concentrate on the task at hand.

Nothing like some raisin bread toast, made outside on the camp stove, in the mountains surrounded by conifers on a brisk clear morning.

Bagels, English muffins, left over garlic bread are doable too.
Gloves and utensils are for sissies.

Without knowing the size of your inverter, hard to tell how low your wattage needs to be. I currently use a 750 watt Black & Decker TR0012SS pop up toaster. $20.00 at Walmart. The slots are wide enough for most bagels, but it is not deep enough for large slices of rye bread.

Yeah, I know about those. I should get one. Whatever happened to the old kind of stovetop toaster, shaped like /_\ ? They had two sides, each with a sort of grill. Wait—I see there are four-sided 'vintage' ones on Etsy. . .

Here's a neat stovetop toaster that will do two sides (or a sandwich) at once:
DeltaToast – The toaster for small kitchens
Clever! But apparently not for sale now, pending a version 2.

I doubt there's any 'low voltage' electric popup toasters out there. a toaster is typically 1200-1500 watts, at 12 volts, that would be 100-130 amps, and require welding cable sized wiring direct from the battery. a lower wattage toaster simply wouldn't get hot enough fast enough to brown the bread without first drying it out to a hard crust.

I could run a conventional 120VAC toaster off my 2000W Renogy PureSine inverter, but I probably wouldn't. We're more likely to use bread rolls rather than sliced bread anyways, and those can be nicely browned in the oven, or on our portable propane BBQ.

One year when we were “camping” out of town in a rental house that needed many repairs (from awful renters), we spent weekends there with no furniture or appliances, just electricity and an electric frying pan. My mother made “toast” of a sort from lightly buttered bread browned in a frying pan. Think “toasted cheese” with only one slice and no cheese. Different, but really very good.

I would try the same technique over any heat.

how many watts is that? cigar plug is good for 15 amps, at 12V thats 180 watts max. home toaster is ~ 900W (1500-1800 watt is a 4 slice, my mistake earlier), but thats 2 slices, so 450W for one slice. a 180W toaster would take 2-3 times longer to toast a slice, and if you want two slices, the first will be cold by the time the second is done.

btw, while I'm finding references to that 12V toaster, I can't find anyone actually selling them anymore, Walmart has it listed as discontinued, other links go to dead sites.

Yes! ….
But, it’s the bread not the toaster. I highly recommend French boule or similar textured bread (experiment), toasted in a frying pan as noted above - (an oven is also helpful but not necessary).
From the Internet::
Brush the entire bread bread bowl, top and bread core with butter. Heat a 12 inch skillet on medium heat. Toast all the flat edges in the skillet until golden brown. Put everything in the oven and bake for three minutes.

Hey Lynn, hope all is going well with you and Jane! Your Escape has the 1500 watt pure sine wave Go power inverter. You should be fine with a toaster under that. Missy would run her hair dryer in the morning, I believe it was 1250 watts.

careful with the hair dryers, my wife's is 1850 watts on high.

a 2 slice toaster is probably around 800 watts, while a 4 slice, could be twice that. most 4 slices let you do 2 at a time. if you have dual golf cart true deep discharge batteries, you probably have about 1900 total watt*hours available before your batteries are down to like 25% which is as deep as I would want to run flooded lead acid deep discharge batteries...

If you run them that deep and have to rely on solar charging, a 190 watt solar panel will probably only be good for about 1000 watt*hours in a fully sunny/clear day. I've seen as much as 2200-2300 watt*hours/day from my 360W monocrystalline solar system with a MPPT controller, but 2000 WH/day is more typical.

Better Chef has a 100 watt toaster that you can use with an inverter. I'm thinking of ordering one myself once I confirm they really do make a 100 watt ... Seems too good to be true.

A 100 watt toaster is going to take a long time to toast bread, and probably dry it out before it's toasted. There's no magic. I bet it takes 8 times longer than a 800 watt toaster, so will use the same total amount of power.

Amazon appears to be selling the same toaster for $15 less. The reviews are not great and though there is no wattage rating given in the description, in the questions someone suggests 700-800 watts. This sounds more realistic.

Maybe a misprint? 1000W seems more likely.

Thanks for the reminder, Shawn. I think the 750W B&W than Jon mentions would be plenty big enough, and wouldn't eat up too much battery.

The 12V toaster than floyd shows is intriguing, but apparently no longer available.

There is no need for a "pure sine wave inverter" to run a heating element. It doesn't matter that the inverter is pure sine wave or not, for that purpose.
