rescuing a big Bigfoot stuck in the snow...

been watching this youtube series by a guy who does off road recovery in southern Utah, which has some of the most spectacular scenery around, and some awesome 4x4ing...

came upon this episode from 2019, where he rescues a a Bigfoot.

pretty wild. The Bigfoot got axle deep in mud and snow, while being towed by a Nissan NV2500 van, so the recovery team brought out a big F250, plus their seriously upgraded Jeep Cherokee XJ.

Fun to watch and the comments are amusing as well! Hopefully they were caught by unexpected snow. Hate to think they would choose to drive in there given those conditions.

Matt's channel is great. He has a great group working with him. I just wish he would include how much the jobs cost.

The clay based trails in UT are often signed as being impassable when wet. The clay turns to slippery soup when water is added. The treads on the tires get filled so you’re driving back on slicks.
Stay tuned to the weather and get out with the very first sign of perspiration.

On a tow like that, the tow truck driver first asks what the limit is on your credit card.

What those guys should have had was a lot more weight in the trucks to give them better traction. And start in 2nd or 3rd, at low engine RPMs to avoid spinning out. Maintain rolling traction. One the tires spin the traction is nil.

That's how roads get torn up. I've had to winch myself out of clay with no trailer attached. I don't live there anymore and that's a good thing.

John,
I've been watching their video's as well. I think the most interesting thing is their use of kinetic tow rope (Use of applied physics! Woohoo!!).
I can just imagine our Escape getting pulled out with one; at it's mass it'll be airborne.

I've been in that powder sand and that clay that turns to adhesive slime. Not something to underestimate.

yeah, a few years ago we took our first extensive trip in southern utah, in late spring, and pushed my F250 longbed diesel 4x4 down some dirt roads. Cottonwood Canyon was easy and hugely beautiful. Left Hand Collet Rd off of Hole in the Wall Rd was gorgeous, but such gnarly driving, that I didn't make any stops as my truck was using the whole width of the road and we were in a box canyon. My wife kept asking me to turn around, but there wasn't anywhere suitable. Somehow we made it all the way up and out the top, and returned to the Escalante area on (can't remember the name), it was a 100 mile loop of box canyons and gnarly.

here, this route:
https://www.google.com/maps/dir/37.7...m0!3e0!5m1!1e4

was as far as I can remember, the ONLY time I've needed 4L on that truck, to get up a couple rock steps, 4H just couldn't push that massive front end up and over. stock sized wheels on a 2002 F250 XLT 4x4 longbed, with BF Goodrich KO2 All Terrain tires (which I put on ALL my trucks, they are awesome).

ok, I took this ONE pic when the road widened shortly after climbing out of the box canyon, looking at the continuing canyon below. GPS Coords and the photo is looking west.

and yeah, re those snatch ropes, amazing watching them pull a MUCH heavier/larger vehicle out with a 4500 lb XJ... sure, the XJ is on like 38's or something and has suspension modified to be suitable, and Matt and his whole clan are excellent drivers.

Cracks me up how many nieces and nephews he has... they go out to eat somewhere, and the waitress is a relative. the girl at the sand hollow OHV kiosk is a relative. etc etc

👍 I've been watching Matt's video's for quite awhile. It reminded me of my old XJ. The funny thing is my XJ and his had a lot in common but not in weight so no mud with mine. It would sink like a Chevy 😁
I should have posted that link here when I watched it 🙄
