no wonder all you northwest folks are always out camping!!!

what a gorgeous area of natural beauty. we were at a workshop in dundee and went on for another week of traveling the coast up to wash state, saw orcas off port townsend, slept on vashon island and returned to portland. amazing place!!!

thanks to those of you who advised us on places to visit. wish we had one of our trailers on the trip. managed to stuff ourselves on the glut of blackberries growing on the roadsides. (btw, black cherries don't like to be dumped into a washing machine.)

portland should be the standard by which other cities are developed. it was special in so many ways. one of you in the city ought to check out the youth hostel we stayed at. we loved the building and wonder who owned it originally. the number of flowering plants was a real surprise. all those roses and not a single japanese beetle! actually, we noticed a variety of butterfly bushes but not a single living butterfly in nine days. anybody know why?

Shhhh Alice...don't give away our secrets! Thank you for all the compliments though and those of us that live here, appreciate guests that also appreciate the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

Butterflies are almost non-existant in the Portland area. The only reason I can think of is we have some sort of wind nearly every day. Either coming in from the Pacific ocean or blowing down the Columbia River Gorge from the east. That wind also keeps mosquitoes away...so it's a good thing. If you saw people camping, did you notice the lack of screen rooms? We don't need screen rooms here....slugs don't fly!

Come back and enjoy the area again Alice. Next time bring the trailer and camp with some great people at the Oregon Gathering

Happy to hear your folks enjoyed the beautiful PNW! Yes its beautiful up here this time of yr... You came just at the right time.. We have had an very warm summer this yr. Although Oregon h as the most beautiful beaches, ours arent to bad, but we have the 'rain forest' here which is also a big attraction. Hope you can make it back one of these days.! Both states have alot to offer as far as visiting places.....

Portland is a dirty bad nasty place.

Filthy. There's garbage everywhere. Concrete everywhere. You can't walk on the streets in daylight without getting shot at.

It rains EVERYDAY. What few trees there are are dead or dying. They have snowstorms in July.

There is no indoor plumbing. Everyone has bad teeth.

Don't go there.

(Think that'll work?)

Sounds about right to me. I haven't been in Portland in ages, don't want to go there. I only go into Portland when I can't avoid it. I haven't seen downtown in several years. Yup, Think I'll stay south of Portland. Now Salem, that's a different matter.
