Ohhh sorry....i've only stayed in campgrounds. In fact i've only had the Scamp for a month...and have not yet camped in it....working on that this weekend

We had our cooler stolen once, but it was left outside our tent. We found it around the bend in the road, everything was scattered over the road. They found no booze, so we lost nothing but our naivety.

That was probably a little unfair generalization. I've not had any problems but one time. I was camped in a very busy crowed place, on the shore of a very pretty lake. The problem was the pretty lake attracted too many of the wrong kind of people. Since that time I avoid crowded places unless I know the crowd. Here in Oregon we have one of the nicest coast lines in the country, it's all public property. The problem, state parks along the coast attract a lot of people some of which don't think there's anything wrong with having light fingers.
The best security is knowing the area and who you're camping with. We camp a lot in winter in AZ, NM, NV, southern CA, and TX. Most of the places are filled with fellow snow birders. They're not a problem.
If a place feels uncomfortable because of other people move on is probably the best security method.

Over the last 12 years we've camp 2,693 days, about 7.5 months per year and have stayed in 'nice' campgrounds and some not so nice. We usually leave our camp site unattended for most of the day.

We have never had anything stolen and we have never been hassled by another camper.

This is not the case for homes I've lived in where we have had a couple of break-ins even with the best of locks.

Trailer campgrounds are about as safe as it gets in my experience.

Can people get in to our trailer rather easily, yes but really even if they did there's not too much to steal.

And usually the 'bad guys' don't live where I camp.

My dogs camp with me. They sound like they would gnaw an arm off of an intruder...until the door or whatever opens then they'd just lick them. We tent camped before moving up to the Scamp. As it is now i lock up valuables...which is basically my handgun, ipad and phone in the car when i'm away. And since i camp often alone i set 2 chairs outside and try to give the illusion that it's not 'just a lady and her dogs'.

A trick I heard from a woman who travelled alone was to leave a very large pair of men's boots outside the trailer...

In 40 years of camping the only looses to date are a cooler & a BBQ neither were stolen while in an RV park. Nothing to get to worried or concerned over my personal safety. Coolers are an easy target at night by kids looking for booze. Happens often in campgrounds everywhere. Most often the coolers are found all together and dumped out not far from the camp ground.

I've only lost a cooler full of adult beverages and that was during the day when I was gone... in an Oregon State Park.

I would feel more comfortable leaving valuables in my trailer, than I would in a locked tug. At the Oregon Gathering one year, late at night... several locked TUGS were broken into... valuables taken and it ruined the trip for a couple of Oregon Gathering participants. Keep your valuables with YOU at night. Don't become another "lessons learned."

Other than beer & stuff, the #1 Thief magnet seems to be Honda Inverter Generators. I was staying at a CA Beach State Park last fall and two were stolen on the same night. The rangers suspect that outside parties came into the park via the beach and made off with them. One wasn't secured in any manner, the other had a heavy cable but the perps just cut through the carry handle that the cable was attached to.

You can resell these on Craigslist in SoCal for $500, no questions asked, in one day.

When I was finishing up my tour with the USDA I was living alone in our pop-up in the state park. Very secure campground locked at night but there was the lake anyone could float across at night. I would rig the door with a tarp strap and the porno potty, as my kids liked to call it, fully loaded. Bucket full of pee would have been the first surprise.

My tug is a pickup with a shell, and I use a Truck Vault <http://www.truckvault.com/>product in the bed for the fishing gear and long guns, when I have them along, and anything small and of high value. Truck Vault makes a lot of dandy security products. The dog in the trailer is the sentry at night.
