Has anyone ever looked into upgrading the locks on a camper? I've recently had to open mine without the key,( have it just don't know where at the moment) and also having to open the lock on one here at work where a coworker broke the key off in something else. I've noticed the locks on them are really really easy to pick. Is this just the nature of the beast? Obviously when you are inside I'm sure there are steps that you could take to lock it better or I think some have an internal lock with no outside mechanism connected to it. Just a curious thought.

Personally, I think all rv locks pretty much suck! I do know that most are about the same key configuration and interchangeable! Even big class A's have the same locks. Hopefully someone will have a suggestion for a better lock!

I'm redoing a burro, and I plan to mount a deadbolt on mine - it'll take a bit of work to get it all lined up right, but the door locks are about as secure as my sister's diary lock when we were kids!

I'll post pix when I get it in - probably in July at the rate I'm going...

A good lock will stop thieves NOT! A quick couple of zip zip with my cordless drill the whole door comes off.

Not if your door screws are through-bolted!

Short of the above mentioned deadbolt and double secured hinges, most eggs are fairly easy pickin's for the serious thief. The amateurs will just try the door and, if it's open they will go in, if not they will move to the next one in line.

My take is that the serious thief will carry a pry bar and do what ever damage to the door that is needed to gain entry. That said, it almost makes more sense to have it be easy to get into and not have to deal with collateral damage as well. It's sorta like having a lock on the door of a popped-up tent trailer..... Duh! (But it is helpful when in storage)

In my RV's I install a small steel safe, that's bolted to the frame, to keep money, papers, hard drives etc in when travelling, that will slow down most perps because they don't come prepared to deal with that and will just grab what's out and run. When I can I also try to build cabinetry around it to make it disappear to the casual eye.

I'd post pics of how I hide them but the peeps that bought them from me wouldn't be very happy.

I don't care if you use unobtanium to hold it on, that aluminum hinge will cut like butter.

Oh, and if it doesn't, I would bet money that I can get into the majority of fiberglass campers with my bare hands.

Of the ones I can't, a saw or sledge will make quick work of it. You're just keeping kids and the average idiot out. Anybody that wants in will get in.

With the fibreglass work I have been doing, I have come to realize that fibreglass is easy to cut. An 18V battery operated wrecking saw, and you are in, through any wall your pick. I think I agree with Bob Miller. If it is easy to break into, they will do less damage.
I don't lock the door on my poop fly, because then when they go through my glove box, they don't have to break the window. They soon learn that there is nothing of value in there, other then the can of spare tire in a can.

Your best bet is to just carry good insurance that covers everything and then you don't have to worry quite as much. I still wouldn't leave sensitive personal info lying about. I'd rather someone stole my money than my wallet (i.e. credit cards, acct numbers, driver's lic., etc.)

Axes are common in campgrounds, one well placed blow to a cast hinge and you're in. Why are we giving away our secrets to thieves?

We're just telling scarey stories for titillation. The only theft I've ever seen in a campground was from a tent, by teenagers from teenagers.

Thomas I thought you were going to say the only theft you've seen in a campground was from a tent by bears... Because that's the only theft I've seen in a campground.

Bears don't steal, they just "borrow".

I'm looking for a lock of some sort...even if it's a door alarm or ding. I haven't had anything irreplaceable stolen but it still makes me ill. A few years ago at Hunting Beach SC someone stole my suglasses off of the picnic table. And last year some tweens that were roaming stole beer out of everyone in my loops cooler after dark. I've had more crap taken at my old marina than camping. But some type of lock would just make me feel better...and peace of mind is all i'm going for...not the smarts of the dipsh*t theives.

HINT...
Try campgrounds instead of RV resorts.
