The federal fiscal cliff is trickling down!! Interesting approach. I like the approach taken by the Maricopa County, AZ sheriff who lets the prisoners work at the local animal shelters and the county animal control budget saved $15 million a year.

As we travel about the country we find a high level of escapism from high tax states. Many of these states are seeing an exodus of residents, CA and CT have both been losing residents and both are known to have high taxes.
It interests me how some states do quite well on half the tax rate of neighboring states. It is something that is under reported.
One must seperate getting ripped from reporting.
It is obvious that on the average people will do what's best for them. Many people spend their careers in one state and retire to a more affordable state, particularly as the currency is devalued and living costs are increasing for those on a fixed income.

Michigan used to exempt pensions from taxation to discourage people from moving to no tax states after retirement. Last year they started taxing pensions again.

Yes, in a compromise they created 3 classes of pensioners. Over a certain age they are grandfathered in, others get a limited exemption, younger pensioners are fully taxed.

One must consider the soon to retire "baby boomer bubble.". I'm sure some governments are considering the coming drop in income tax collection that will be associated with this.

In Michigan if you were born before 1946 (we were born WAY before 1946) pensions are not taxed and that includes social security, IRAs, 401Ks,private and public pensions. In other areas in MI, our sales tax is 6% which is lower than many other states and housing costs are fairly reasonable. For example: we have a 16 year old 4 bedroom house , two story , full walk-out basement, two car garage, on 50 wooded acres and, according to the tax assessment, fair market value is under $200,000. I wouldn't sell it for $300,000.

I've noticed that some states are dropping or considering dropping their income tax.
9,000,000 people have left the work force in the last 4 years, a rather significant percentage of the work force. Most aren't now paying income tax but still buying sales taxable stuff.
Of course there are states without either income tax and sales tax.
It's too bad the government's focus isn't efficiency instead of tax collection. Programs arevrarely eliminated.

Norm, you don't get promoted or elected by maintaining or heaven forbid, cutting. Not to long ago Maggie read a book on ancient Rome. Same story, different outfits. Raz

Becoming more efficient doesn't necessarily mean cutting

If only...
I worked for the VA system for a few years. It was very informative.
It has helped me keep my business efficient.
