The Spirit of Christmas
Today we did our annual homage to the Spirit of Christmas and killed a tree.
So what are doing, real or fake?

We haven't had a tree of any kind in years since we haven't been home in years on Christmas. Some were spent in Arizona and some, including this year, in Indianapolis at the home of our son, daughter-in-law, and three grandkids. We live in MI but are on the road to South Carolina, from which we'll drive, leaving the trailer behind, to Indy.

Always do real, because it is....well, real.
Call me a sappy traditionalist, but fake trees to me are a turn off. Just the way I am wired.
Environmentally, there is really no better option that a real tree. If you buy at a lot, they are all farm grown and harvested specifically for this use. If you conscientiously harvest from the wild, it is a renewable resource. Real trees are used for much after their use.
More than half our our trees over the years have be harvested ourselves, mostly off of our own land, and some from crown land adjoining it. If time is an issue, I usually buy a tree from the boy scouts.
Fake trees are factory made, and end up in landfills. I know some people have kept them for a fair few years, and this is good.
The bottom line, is to enjoy whatever it is you use, and have yourself a Very Merry Christmas.

My dad had 5000 Xmas trees planted on our family land. Got so he couldn't take care of them so they grew up. I had heard that you could cut off all but the bottom row of branches and one of them would grow up into a new tree. Tried it once and it worked. Never tried it again so have no idea it it happens a lot, a little, or rarely.

We decided to skip the tree this year. It only encourages gift giving that I'm trying to avoid. We already have everything, and two of some things (like trailers). Everyone I know is in the same predicament; what do you get for somebody that already has everything?
In years past we would cram the tree in to an already full room, or we'd have to take one of the recliners out to make room for it. We have an artificial tree in a box in storage, and it will stay there for now...
I'd rather have your presence than your presents. There's always room at our table. We have fake evergreen garland on the mantlepiece, and other decorations.

I've not put a tree up since the kids left home
Maybe down the road when grandchildren arrive I'll start again.

We have a long tradition of going out to the bush, a nearby tree lot, or one of our neighbors' yards to get our Christmas tree. But about 3 yrs ago we bought an artificial tree that comes in three pieces in a box complete with lights. Takes about 2 minutes to set up and another 20 minutes to add the other decorations. Fast to take down also, and no tree needles to vacuum up around the house for months afterwards. I think I would choose to stay with the artificial tree.

We're heading out this weekend to cut our BIG tree for the family room: 15'. We get a smaller tree for the front parlour of the house. Yeh... front parlour. It's a 1901 Victorian!

We are heading to Home Depot this weekend to choose our tree. The cats climbed our old artificial tree and topple it over so allergies aside, our house will be filled with pine scent for Christmas - taking me back to winter holiday smells. Lovely.

The tree has to be artificial. My wife really like the tree to rotate on a motorized base. With rotating ornaments. One is a mirror ball with a light shining on it. Yea disco Christmas tree, we are real traditionalists.

My dog has taken to eating the ornaments - even the glass balls. Any tips? Jalapeno spray?

I used to cut one down but it just got too difficult and too cold! Now I head to STew Leonards or Home Depot and buy a 6' Frasier Fir. They tie it on the car and I am ready to go. This year I an hosting a neighborhood party so I really would like a nice tree. Next year, if no party or guests, I will probably buy a fake one. Last year I decided NO tree and then on the 23rd I broke down and bought one...just did not feel right.

john---i really like your idea!
we have done it all---started out with a fake tree which we used for many years. then switched to a real one--have gone out and cut it at tree farms a couple of times, usually we buy from some local charity. last year, we went back to artificial. this year---we aren't putting up a tree. instead, we are
going to stack decorated cardboard boxes in a roughly tree-shaped pile and see the kids' reaction when they all come over for brunch on boxing day.
(get it? boxing day)....oh yes, for those who don't celebrate boxing day, it's the 26th.
i have to work 24-25-26 afternoon shift---hard to get too excited about "the big day".

I would train it not to. I know dogs have iron stomachs, but it could possibly come to harm. Is it just a young pup, Tom?
