Questions have repeatedly arisen about towing laws by state and reciprocity issues. I thought I'd start a reference thread for folks to post links they find that they think are useful in determining the requirements for trailer towing from state to state.

Here are Iowa Code links that reference towing and necessary equipment:

Iowa brake, hitch, and sway control requirements

Lighting and clearance lights

Safety Chain requirements

"Camp" trailer defined

Interesting that if it is over 16 feet long, it is not a camp trailer.

This is a quirk in how DMV designates the 2 types of trailers there are in California:
  1. Camp Trailer, which is eligible for PTI Plates
  2. Trailer Coach, which is exempted from the permanent trailer identification plate program, and is Titled and Registered like an Automobile.
