Trail-Mite Camper History

The history of Trail-Mite Campers ,their origin and any degree of detail about their operation seems to be missing, but desired, by those owning or interested in Trail-Mites.

Here is what I know from my past experience.

Trail-Mite was a division of Henry Engineering Company, located at 3001 Red Hill Avenue, Esplanade II, Suite 212. Costa Mesa, California 92626

(714) 546-7430 -Sales
(714) 538-0031 -Factory

Don Welcher -Sales Manager

In the late 1960 and early 1970's I purchased and sold a number of Trail-Mites in the Houston, Texas area with some being delivered as far away as the east coast and the great Northwest.

When this activity began to interfere with my full time job, and an inability to find reliable help, I closed the sales operation (6 days a week) and started a Friday (I day a week) operation renting a fleet of Trail-Mites by the week. I continued this operation for a number of years.

Trail-Mites are a very reliable, low maintenance camper and have "everything you need and nothing you don't" for a good camping experience.

Hope this is helpful !! Vince

Nice to know, Vince. Did renters take pretty good care of them?

Trail-Mite Experience

No, maintenance was not a problem, as there's not much to maintain on a T/M. The weave on the upholstery was so loose you could stick a ballpoint into a seat and never see any damage after removing it. I would unzip the covers and wash them as needed and occasionally replace the floor covering. I did learn early not to rent to deer hunters as some were really slobs, trying to convince me the blood and body part were already there when they rented. Renting to families with children was a pleasure even if it was a little more clean-up.

Regarding pictures, I am on a major sorting job getting ready to downsize businesses and home. One of my sons said he thought he uncovered a factory sales brochure, some decals and some of the simulated "wood" tape that went around the bellyband. If pictures show up I will post. Vince

Thanks, I googled some images of them and they're pretty cool little campers.
