Traveling/Camping alone

Bob,
I always look forward to visiting with you at the Algonac rally. You are well informed and a good conversation is to be had whenever I have pulled up a chair next to your camper.

I do get what you mean. You see something neat or interesting (or incredibly foolish) and you want to turn and say "check that out". I used to do solo camping and would enjoy the solitude of myself and the dog. But it was also a change of pace from camping with family or spouse not the only way I camped.

The dog thing works if you like dogs, several rescue organizations will have older dogs that need homes but don't leave you housebreaking a puppy. I used to travel for work and my dog made a good companion. He was very well trained. Didn't have much else to do in the evenings so we did training.

If you can find a local caravan group that does regular weekend camping trips that can be a way to have some companionship that while different than a partner can still add to the enjoyment. My parents belonged to one in Colorado, the members that lost spouses still had the group to help keep them company.


Our weather as been pathetic bordering on evil. If you left Arizona to be here what were you thinking?

There are many Facebook groups for campers. Rubber Tramps and Boondocking or Free Camping USA are two. They have lots of communication between members and you might find a get together or two that interest you.

I have a personal interest in a particular breed of dog and there are several Facebook groups that I enjoy, and some times get together with other members for events. A good way to share common interests.

Have you thought about a position as a campground host at a State Park. I know 2 parks that I have frequented and met hosts that really enjoy the job and strike up friendships that last a long time. I was at Lost Dutchman SP a few years ago and met a host that spends winters at the park in Arizona and comes up to a state park near me in Washington for the summer.

she is some sort of a jack russle mix not a large dog just right for us! dog pound dogs are just so thankful to be rescued they have an inner honesty about them is all I can say!

Yes indeedy the rescues are grateful to be given a home. We have had mostly rescues except for my little Maltese dogs in the 90's. Jack the first Malty was my favorite dog ever, he died of a stroke or heart attack right in my arms. Never got over it. So, I began rescuing pooches. I loved every single one. I have two now , Snickers was a 12 yr old Chihuahua, a mean little bugger, who was a fear biter. That was 3 years ago. He's a great little guy, just needed some understanding. I told the pound he won't be coming back. Last year when I was pre-diabetic I continued my 3 year search for a big dog mix. Had to love my cat, Snickers, the car, and walking. Got 4 for 4. We walked off 16 pounds and the pre-diabetic condition doesn't exist

I adopted Frodo, aka Shotgun Willie named after he shot right past the nice bed I had made up for him in the back of my mini van and sat right in the front passenger seat. Yup, Shotgun Willie, he is a real clown, all 70 pounds of him.

If you're interested in campground hosting why limit yourself to State Parks. There National Park campgrounds, BLM campgrounds, Corps of Engineers campgrounds, National Forest campgrounds. County campgrounds, city campgrounds. And the list goes on and on.

Unless you have a good supply of money you might not find the kind of people you can relate to in Washington State Parks.

I'm still married but do several solo trips a year as my wife isn't very interested in my 2nd hobby, amateur astronomy. These trips are typically 3-5 nights, at various dark sites within a half days drive of home.

My suggestion is, to get involved with a group for something you're interested in, be it old cars, fishing, star gazing, whatever, and join their outings. Fiberglass RV rallies would be another

When I lost my wife and best scuba diving/hiking/camping/fishing buddy of 40 years, I sold or donated everything related to camping to the Boy Scouts. Pickup, camper, 17ft canoe, and just retired. Spent a year working on my place (built a carriage house/garage since I'd had not had one in 30 years) and did many handyman jobs for single ladies in exchange for dinners - eventually deciding I really wanted another companion. Spent 18 months on eHarmony, dated 16 women more than once, and married someone completely different from my first wife (my requirements included learning to scuba dive at 60 years old and travel, including trailer camping.) Been over 10 years now, and couldn't be happier. Life is what YOU make it.....
