I have a parakeet or small parrot called a Bourke Parakeet.
When I'm living in the trailer her cage takes up one of the two captain's chairs I have in the
Casita. (I have the Freedom Deluxe model w/ the side mini-dinette)
She gets time "out of cage" nearly everyday.
Birds are sensitive to air pollution so I avoid any strong scents or chemicals (harsh cleaners are a big NO!) and I never use the
propane stovetop. (I have an electric hotplate instead.) I also don't use candles or air fresheners, and I avoid aerosol cans of any sort.
When I'm on the move the cage is belted into the front passenger seat of the SUV. Iris is my copilot! She likes to look around as we go. I remove all the noisy toys from the cage lest they jingle nonstop and just leave a little bit of water in the water cup so it is less likely to spill. She has no problem eating from the cups mid-journey, unless the road is unusually bumpy. After a long gap between trips it might take her the first 15 min or so to adjust to keeping her balance in a moving car and not fluttering about on the perch but she adjusts pretty well. She is also very used to travelling with me however. I doubt most birds that are used to a more placid existence would take to car trips so well. In fact I've heard some can panic so much as to literally die of fright.
I'm a very overprotective birdie mom and if she's in the car with me I don't stop for very long or leave her alone in the car hardly ever. (The car could become too hot or too cold for her very quickly) Also once, only once, I drove with her in the car past dark and she didn't like that at all... I think she was annoyed she couldn't
fall asleep because the cage was still being shaken, but she couldn't see very well either, and started to freak out a bit. (I was pretty stressed out and upset at the time myself though so hard to say how much my pet was picking up on my mood.... in any event, we all made it through the rough patch.)
