When I first saw the subject title... it made me think of how many times I've hit my head on the bottom of my window AC unit... damn that hurts.

That is scary!!!
Imagine being under the canopy, minding your own business, filling your tank- when that dude arrives.
One more hazard to watch out for at the gas station!
I'm glad they weren't hurt!

The ATM cover was (obviously) a bad design - no bollards to stop or at least slow anyone down.

MOST gas stations are better designed... the posts are interior and there are bollards.

hope the driver was well insured - liability ##and## comprehensive on his rig

I don't think bollards would have helped. Bollards protect the vertical posts supporting the canopy from being hit, but in this case the post wasn't touched. It was his trailer that hit the roof, shifting it to one side and off center from the canopy support posts. After that gravity did the rest.
