My wife Joanne and I made the pilgrimage to Backus once again to pick up a new
Scamp 16 Deluxe Layout B (side dinette/ front bath). We left on Wednesday the 11th, drove 720 miles thru MI's Upper Peninsula, Northern WI, and spent the night in Duluth, MN. Thursday morning we were on the road for another 140 miles, and rolled in to
Scamp in time for our 8:00 AM appointment.
We had our orientation with Dave in half the time it took for our 13 Standard with no bath a few years ago. Every question was answered, and quite a few we didn't know we had. We found a 110 V outlet that wasn't moved per our instructions, but that was quickly taken care of while we did the paperwork in the office. I talked to Kent Eveland the owner, Micah in service, and some of the sales staff and continue to be impressed with the friendly customer service we experienced in the past.
We started back and spent the night in Ashland, WI. We were pushing for Ironwood, MI, but too exhausted to go any further. We slept for 9 hours in the Scamp! At home, 5 hours sleep is a lot for me. We never have any trouble sleeping in the
Scamp. We took our time going thru the U.P. Friday, and spent the night in Manistique. We were fortunate to be in the middle of the peak colors for the entire trip. Absolutely beautiful!
We had many great times in our 13, but decided we really wanted to leave the bed as a bed AND have a table to eat at, and came to the conclusion a bathroom would make life a little easier. The 16D Layout B we toured in Scamp Camp FL was exactly what we wanted! In fact we ordered it over the phone while still in Sebring. It seems YUGE to us. It didn't need winterizing. Scamp tests the plumbing with air pressure, so didn't use the bathroom on the way home. We stopped at our favorite Pastie Restaurant, Lehto's before we left the U.P.. We took our beef pasties (with gravy) out and had our first meal on the Scamp dinette while overlooking Lake Michigan. We couldn't stop grinning! This was exactly how we imagined it would be!
One minor little problem with the Scamp. We found 2 of the 4 screws that hold the Maxx Fan on were missing. Evidently never installed on the assembly line. This let the fan hood partially lift on the highway and let the rain in. Our bedding was soaked when we got home, but the cushions were dry. A call and email to Scamp and the missing hardware was here in 2 days. The fan itself is really a nice upgrade from the 3-spped Fantastic Fan. This baby has 10 speeds. The lowest 3 or 4 speeds are barely audible. There is a remote control that opens or closes the hood, turns it on and off, and you can even set it to come on when the trailer reaches a pre-determined temperature while you're away.
To sum the experience up; we had a great time, and are really looking forward to the adventures and memories the future holds for us. We couldn't be happier with layout, the build, and had to tell someone! Who better than all our
fiberglass friends! We've learned so much over the years from all of you, and it resulted in the "perfect for us" dream trailer. Thanks!
There are very few pictures of the 16D on the Scamp website. I'll try to post some. I've had mixed luck posting them since switching to Apple, so this might not happen...
