Do you guys talking about FORTRAN and that old computer pic wanna' feel REALLY old?
On my last trip to the Smithsonian (quite a few years ago, to be sure) they had a copy of McCracken's FORTRAN manual on display!!!!!
30 Years with the NCR Corporation as a Field Services Representative.
8 years with US Bank as a Data Communications Network Engineer/Project Manager.
4 years retired.
I'm a custom furniture artist.............though my business card labels me a Wood Artisan. I make very expensive custom furniture. I show in galleries and art shows, but most of my work is from referrals. I'm presently working on an 18' conference table.
Here's a link to an on-line album showing a few of my more recent pieces:
I retired from the Bell System after forty years, where I was a service technition. As such I installed and maintained switchboards in the major factories and hospitals in our area. Now I have many occupations such as family Photographer, Gardener, Canoe builder, House repairman, Cook and Bottle washer. I have now combined two of my favorite hobbies into one. My wood carving and making musical instruments. Here's my latest "Mountain Dulcimer" under construction. These things are a blast.
I am a retired Flight Attendant. Due to the nature of the Airline business my career went from the original Frontier Airlines, Peoples Express, Piedmont Airlines and finally retiring from USAIR.
The last 14 years I've had my own technology business in Phoenix and now primarily my company does search engine optimization for business websites. Currently we are doing a volunteer project networking a 26 Acre ranch that Teen Challenge Arizona operates called Christian Life Ranch.
Another cube-dweller here - I manage a small group of web developers for a big insurance company.
I don't really want any pictures of me at work but this should give you an idea - only add glasses and change the hair color to Silver.
I work as a Network Systems Administrator for a defense contractor to remain nameless. Like some of you out there I too started with FORTRAN then C++ and that OO stuff. Thats when I moved to Sysadmin and Computer networking. Now I work on Linux and Sun systems and I love it.
This is a truly interesting thread - thanx, Frederick, for bringing it back. It is amazing to read about the varied paths lives have taken over the years. For those who care to read on, here's how the Geezer's arrived at this point in their respective former lives & current WONDERFUL life:
Dave - USN during the Korean "conflict"; apprentice at San Diego Gas & Electric Co, worked in/owned auto machine shops; Service Mgr. for Bay Area Kenworth; Insurance Adjuster & Heavy Equipment Damage Appraiser (retired from Crawford & Company after establishing & running the Elko office). Sorry, no available pics of these endeavors.
Leslie - Day Care during stay-at-home-Mom years; President & Chief Mop of my commercial cleaning service; Insurance Adjuster Trainee/Office Administrator/General Go-fer in Dave's Elko office ; Loss Control Tech, then Security & Fire Prevention Tech at the 2nd largest gold mine in North America (seeing all those U/G miner photos made me nostalgic). Wish we had pics with us that show me holding a bar of gold worth over $100 grand, and another shot covered with powder after a goof while servicing a fire extinguisher ... comic relief!
All-in-all, we feel we've had quite a ride and the adventure continues! So, now that everyone's bored to tears, we'll sign off - take care, L 'n D

I've worked a lot of different jobs over the years, probably easier to say what I haven't done than what I have. Right now I am a Hollywood Teamster, many years away from retirement. What does a Teamster do in The Industry? As little as possible.
As far as pictures, I think all I have on my computer of me is the business card my buddy designed for me. It's as good a likeness as any, and shows one facet of my humor.
I am an (about to be ) retired rail transportation specialist for Canadian sPacific Railway. Thats one of 'our' terms for a Conductor/Yard Foreman .
One of my tasks is to try and move railcar (or cars) back n forth (or vice versa) over some rather unruely rail conditions (as illusterated) WITH having them fall OFF of the rails and ONTO the ground.
This appended photo is evidance of an occurance called a Sun Kink and is the result of the suns heat warming (and expanding) the heavy metal rails (which are spiked/nailed) and forcing the expanded/heated metal to warp because it cannot expand lengthwise due to the fact that is bolted to the next rail length in either direction!
I owned and operated several Pizza shops and a couple of nite clubs for just about 20 years. Man am I glad those days are past! Now I build 1 or 2 custom homes a year. Laura is an RN working in ICU and Emergency.
