Also, IMHO gas prices need to be higher (as they are in nearly every other country) to force companies into making more fuel-efficient vehicles. For-profit companies will not do this themselves and customers do not choose fuel efficiency over HP, so unfortunately, the govmint' needs to be driver of change.

Knowing what we do now about the environmental and health costs of burning fuel I'm baffled as to why gas is not ten times what it was in 1918.

Also, I just bought an ICE engine car because electrics are not where I need them to be for my use and I didn't get the most fuel efficient one I could have, so I'm not perfect in this race either.

Speaking of gas.

Yeah, I guess that sort of thinking is archaic at best, anathema at worst, in today's America?

Well then, we women ought to take things over because we are totally not mentioned in any of your quotes.

We are the government--by the people, for the people, and of the people. Just because one doesn't agree with what is going on--legally, does not mean evil lurks.

I agree that I am surprised that gas isn't double what it is here. Also, no politician is pulling the strings, the market is. Every time there is a hurricane in the south, our prices suddenly climb. It isn't because our fuel comes from the gulf--it comes from Alaska and is refined in Anacortes, but it is because of market pressure. The world price is driven up due to a shortage elsewhere. That's how a free market works.

Not sure if that Baaken oil is made into fuel here. We get their oil going through in railroad cars.

^^^ Yep,maybe someone can edit out the gratuitous political whining. AFAIK, our gas is cheaper than in any other "civilized" country. Anyway, 87 octane is $3.09 in my little town but $3.49 in the larger town 15 miles away. Hard to figure. BTW, I'm happy to get an additional 12 cents/gallon off from Mapco. RVs are a hobby, gas prices go up and down, no drama here.

By definition "consumer price index" which is used to measure the inflation, doesn't include "volatile fuel and food prices" :-)
