Why So Many Canadians Here?

I love Canadians (living 30 minutes from Windsor), but I'm curious why there are so many Canadian FG trailer manufacturers and such a large (comparatively) following here? Do Canadians just live more modestly than Americans and are attracted to a more practical trailer? Government regulations or tax laws?

Hi: Thomas G... We Canadians love our American neighbours. That's why most all of us live within 60 miles of the border. Of the 46 million, those of us who pay taxes have to run the whole country... not just a state the size of California.
We tend to think we're modest but we do like the finer things in life and take pride in the job we do. Having a national healthcare system means not going without care and we are better for it. Thank you goes to the late N.D.P. leader the Rt. Hon. Mr. Tommy Douglas.
Having a very conservative banking system helps too, as you must prove you don't need money to buy a house/car/trailer etc. before they'll lend you any.
Our regulations also issue us a reality cheque in that certain claims can't be made about our products.
Lastly there aren't enough Canadian fiberglass RV owners to have our own forum other than Bolerama. Even the Escape forum is American. The greatest majority of the trailers produced in Canada are exported to the US., so we live on the WWW where we can coexist.

What's the split, country-wise, between Canada and the U.S. when it comes to presently-producing molded fiberglass trailer makers?

Francesca

P.S.

I'd like to renew my objections as to how readily you folks gave up the fight back when the border was in dispute...had you held out a little longer, I'd be a Canadian, too! ...

It's because we're on the WWW and for the most part, English speaking as a first language... I think.

O.K.!
(We "almost a Canadian"s are polite, too, you know...eh?)

Exactly how many pontifications does EH-tiquette demand before hijacking can commence?

That doesn't explain all the Canadian FG manufacturers given the relatively small population.

Hi: Francesca Knowles... The war of 1812 isn't over. It just morphed into the war of 2012. Now it's about "Red Peppers". The fact that the Brits scorched the Presidents house, and it had to be whitewashed didn't end it!!!
Don't worry about boundaries and word spellings... we still love you.

I thought you spent the winter watching seal breathing holes, armed with a harpoon.

Wellll, regulations probably have a whole lot to do with it. Surfboard manufacturers have gone out of business (after 40 years... fiberglassers) and the chroming (like hot rod bumpers... heavy metals) are nearly non-existent in the U.S. And while you can say we're over regulated, I prefer to think we're more concerned about Mother Earth.

NO POLITICAL COMMENTS WANTED.

Yea, but..........this all started back in the 1970's when we didn't know a carcinogen from a taco. It seems like Canadians have a natural affinity to the little FG trailers, maybe something in their cultural subconscious.

Look around you. How many chrome bumpers do you see on cars these days? None.
And that's why they went out of business. Not a huge market in hot rod bumpers.

Funny! I used to own some businesses in Spokane (where the family home is located). I remember the day Gretsky was traded from Edmonton to LA and a couple of Canadians came in. I hadn't heard the "final" trade news but could tell they were kinda "testy". One of the guys spoke up and said " well are you happy that you yanks stole one of our national treasures?" Being a Major major Edmonton fan I had to look at him and explain a little geography. I'm still ticked off about that trade. Blame it on his actress wanna be wife grrrrrrr!
PS Hockey doesn't belong in LA or Phoenix.

It's probably a cultural thing too, where business is less concerened about making big money on ONE unit and would prefer to make a smaller margin on MANY units?

As a US citizen, I would like to buy American made, but don't particularly care for the current offerings....

WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. Hot rodders spend $$$$$$$$$$$$$ on stuff, two chroming shops have gone out of business in the PDX area in the past five years and it ALL had to do with handling of HazMat.

Actually, Canada has environmental regulations comparable to the US, and more stringent in many areas. Like the US, plating operations and small fiberglass shops are becoming very scarce, and in many areas are outright prohibited by zoning regulations.

We even pay an additional environmental tax at the consumer level on many items to ensure their safe disposal. eg. in BC, $0.55 on an oil filter to over $10.00 on some electronic items. That tax pays for disposal depots where used items can be properly disposed of. Is that the situation in the US too?

My view of why so many Canadians participate in this forum is that Canadians caught on to fiberglass trailers in a big way early on. Trillium, Boler and their many plants, licensees, and franchisees across Canada produced a huge number early on and these make up a large proportion of the used units available now. Many of these original Canadian manufacturers are now gone and this forum is a common meeting place for many owners. Many of the large US manufacturers are still in business and have their own forums where owners congregate for brand specific information. That's my theory anyway.

Well I can see that the battle is joined, but....

I'm still looking for proofs of the original assumption: That there are more molded trailer makers presently operating in Canada than in the U.S....

So what are the numbers? Does anyone know?

Francesca
