'70s Cloud 9 -- DIY awning?

Hi all,

I have a '70s Cloud 9 and would like to make an awning/canvas pull-out for the side, but I'm having trouble finding information on how to do so (I don't even know the right terminology -- do we call them awnings, or what?). Has anyone here added an awning to their trailer themselves? I'd love to hear about it!
